Mortal Kombat II (Cinema)

 

Karl Urban steps into Johnny Cage's boots in a far superior sequel. Still not quite up to the PWSA version but a lot of fun with plenty of game Easter Eggs. Kano gets all the best lines.

 

The end credit remix of the theme even apes the video of the original below by having the actor's names appear when their character is announced.

Watched Crime 101 with Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry and Mark Ruffalo over the weekend. Nicely shot, decent acting but it's bit formulaic. Overall I enjoyed it so if you are looking for something new to watch (instead of rewatching a favourite) give it a go. Score: 5 Bananas.

The Running Man (2025) Sky Movies

 

From what I gather much nearer to the book up to just before the end. OK time passer but totally forgettable.

Sinners (Sky Movies recorded)

 

Twin brothers return to 1932 Clarksville Mississippi with a load of cash of dubious provenance planning to set up a juke joint and go semi-legit, recruiting a young lad whose preacher father isn't keen on him playing the Blues in such a godless place. Things don't go according to plan.

 

Whilst the trailer and all the publicity for the movie give the potential viewer a clearer idea of what the film is going to be it's structured so that it should be a surprise when things happen with a short prologue that foreshadows what is to come and then jumps back a day. The "x hours/days/weeks etc earlier" opening isn't something I normally like as it's generally used to promise the attention deficit that there will be some action later but in this case it is justified, especially for viewers like me who aren't Blues fans. Like "The Blues Brothers" you don't need to be a Blues fan to enjoy the movie and, though the director probably didn't set it up this way, I'd say that it proves that the devil has the best tunes.

 

Highly recommended and if you don't know what it's about, go in cold. Very violent and quite a lot of non-nude sex and swearing if such things offend.

Finding Emily (Cinema)

 

After he gets his perfect girl's number only to find there are missing digits, a young would-be musician launches a campus-wide search for her at the university where he works. This brings him into the orbit of a psychology student who sees in him the ideal subject for her thesis that postulates that love is an unnecessary evolutionary hangover.

 

We were actually going to see "The Sheep Detectives" but got the times wrong and decided to give this a punt. It's an amusing romcom but I'd wait for home release, especially as you already know the ending.

Jack Ryan - Ghost Thingy

 

Run of the mill and very forgettable.

 

I can remember watching Harrison Ford in clear and present danger multiple times back in the day which is miles better than this.

Final Broadcast (2026) - on Prime

 

A nuclear apocalypse is coming, and the last few hours are shown through an American TV news show. Imagine "This Morning" covering the end of the world, with a countdown clock on screen all the time.

 

Very strange premise, as the government announced the war would begin ten years ago - for no apparent reason. TV coverage includes weather, cookery and some irritatingly chipper presenters on a discussion panel.

 

I really enjoy apocalypse films - Threads is an all-time favourite - but this is a very different approach. Worth a watch.

Spiderman Noir - Very good series, Nicolas Cage is excellent and very Cage, definitely worth a watch if you like Bogart/Cagney etc Movies.

Sascha Baron Cohen plays a misogynistic ad exec who finds himself in his worst nightmare: A parallel world where women rule the roost.

 

Some very funny bits but not a must see.

Mercy (Prime Video)

 

In the near future a cop (Chris Pratt) finds himself on the receiving end of the automated court system he championed and has 90 minutes to prove his innocence whilst strapped to what could be his execution chair. Interesting concept but a bit "meh". Rebecca Ferguson gives good frosty as the AI judge but then gets a bit animated and emotional later. Probably because the system appears to be running on Windows 98.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Prime Video)

 

Looks great but lacks suspense as we already know where the eponymous heroine will end up. Tom Burke turns up as a cut price Road Warrior to help tick off some of the "how Furiosa turns into the character from Thunder Road" boxes.

 

File under disappointing.

The Mandalorian and Grogu  (Cinema)

 

I've found most of the "Star Wars" shows a bit plodding so I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The movie start at the action-packed end of a "job" and then manages to keep up the pace apart from a breather before the final showdown. Wish the show had been more like this: Mando gets a job and goes off to shoot/punch/kick/flame etc lots of people.

 

Not great, but worth catching on Disney.

Disclosure Day (Cinema)

 

A security tech at a private firm that seems to have a lot of power over the military and law enforcement steals something and goes on the run with plans to reveal all to the world. A TV weather lady starts speaking in a strange language and develops extraordinary powers. Together they must prepare the world for Disclosure Day.

 

Fun action thriller that moves at a cracking pace. Well worth a look though you'll probably have lots of "hold on!" thoughts once you leave the screen.

Misbehaviour (Sky Movies recording)

 

Trailer kinda spoilerific.

 

 

Based on the true story of when a nascent Women's Lib took action against the Miss World contest in 1970 and also covering the racist attitudes shown to some of the contestants.

 

It's not going to go down as an all time classic, but it is well worth a look.

Masters of the Universe (2026) (Cinema)

 

 

After he is sent to Earth as a young boy, Prince Adam returns to his homeland to overthrow the evil Skeletor.

 

I've never seen more than a few minutes of the cartoon though I did watch the previous movie (that gets a nice nod here) but the trailer looked fun, and it was. I really don't understand the snippy reviews as the film was never supposed to be a masterpiece, just an entertaining bit of fluff and an attempt to shift more toys. Well, I'm not in the market for any new action figures, but we both enjoyed the movie so I'd say it has the power.

If you think it looks fun, well worth catching. It's an Amazon movie so it will probably be streaming very shortly.

The Lost Bus (Apple TV)

 

 

Based on a true story about a bus driver who drove a bus full of 22 kids to safety during the 2018 Californian wildfire. It seems that there has been quite a bit of "movie peril" added to the story, but it certainly works. My hand is still feeling the after-effects from being crushed by my wife's during the film. Worth a look; a cut above the usual disaster flick.

The Sheep Detectives (Prime Video)

 

When their shepherd is murdered his flock decide to solve the mystery themselves, using the knowledge they have picked up from the crime novels he would read them at night.

 

Meant to see this at the cinema but they they mainly had afternoon showings. Was surprised to see this on Prime last night and went for it. Quite enjoyed it, though there were some surprisingly dark bits - the source novel is German.

Wilding (Prime Video)

 

 

Documentary that follows a couple's attempts to "rewild" the farmed-out land that they have inherited.

 

Stunning wildlife photography and an interesting look at the potential in the concept. Gives you hope that if humans aren't around the landscape will recover. Only slightly let down by the unacknowledged recreations of past events which leads you to question how much of the "documentary" was staged. OTH I was sent a screener of a "true crime" doc that used many of the same techniques so I guess it doesn't bother everyone.

 

Anyway, if the trailer piques your interest it's worth 75 minutes of your time.

Ellen Cole (Lin Shaye) does not expect to live much longer. She wants to spend the time she has left on her Montana ranch, but a developer has other ideas.

 

Dark and comedic: A gunman who is himself confronted with a gun says, hoping not to get shot, "I have a cat ..."

Saw this yesterday, and have to give is a 'C'. Not Spielburg's best effort, and whilst it had a lot of good ideas, I don't think the film knew what it wanted to be.
Worth watching when it comes to streaming though.
Two takeaways we got from it though:

 

1.  There is a need for a decent henchmen recruiting agency as their own recruiting seems to be lacking.
2. There is also an opening for Evil Corporations staff clothing company. Everyone in black is very confusing.

I guess some Disneys also go a bit dark but I'd say that, while there's nothing too objectionable in it, it's not particularly aimed at kids. I've asked the collective elsewhere and may update.

 

Meanwhile, I saw Little Brother on Netflix.

 

Trailer (and film) definitely not suitable for kids and NSFW with an F bomb near the start, partial nudity and bodily functions etc etc.

 

 

John Cena plays the world's most ripped estate agent who, on the eve of his TV debut in a highly rated reality show, finds his life invaded by his "brother" who he once spent an afternoon with to earn college credits. It's not a classic but I did laugh out loud quite a few times.

Mme LeMarchand's take was not suitable for little ones, the next stage up might not have enough to keep them watching but 10+ should be fine. Basically, it's not a film aimed at kids and some may not find it boring whist the others may find some parts a bit brutal.
