Crushing hard disks?

After a lot of googling I finally found one that is a good price (£249), looks fun as well

That looks like it'll be a heck of a lot of work for 500 disks...

I just use a recycling company that destroys the data for you and provides you with documentation to that effect.

 

We use: PRM Green Technologies (free recycling service).

 

We use this firm as well. As long as you have 30 items of computer hardware they will collect them free of charge and we also get a destruction certificate for all the hard drives sent. Great service

I agree. Glass drives are a different matter and don't need taking apart. You just bash them until you hear sand inside!

 

Server and other metal drives need taking apart for physical destruction. Just bashing them does nothing.... Either that or a heavy duty drill that can go straight through the casing and the platter.

+1. Dismantle, hammer, bricks. Give it a good mashing until it's nicely warped and sufficiently textured. With glass platter drives just hit the entire thing, case and all, for a little while. You'll hear when it's fine

What, you never had a bad day at work? I'd clear 500 disks easy with some days I've had

 

Does your tech dept. not have a grinding wheel? That ought to make short work of any platters, you'd just need to spend a bit of time dismantling them. If you're moving to SSD's it really doesn't make much sense investing in a machine unless it's got lots and lots of spikes (like a golf shoe) so it will destroy SSD chips etc. That one-hole machine certainly wouldn't be deemed sufficient by yours truly. Not for anything sensitive.

We just asked PRM to collect our drives along with a few other items. If you don't have enough other items, talk to another local school and join a collection with them. PRM are happy to do that as they just need to cover fuel.
