Just tried the Crysis demo and it sucks on my machine

It should work ok on that spec - you'll not get the full advantages of it though. To get it to run 'well' you'd need a 8800GT or better card...

Are you sure your running the latest beta driver (169.09) for nvidia as that is supposed to make a difference.

Find a way of justifying 2 8800GTXs!

The guy who does the Ctrl-Alt-Del webcomic has 2 in his machine, setup in SLI. And I think he may have managed to justify them as a business expense .

A mate of mine spent around £250 on an 8800GT, which was nearly half his computer budget!

 

Colin McRae DiRT lists the 8800 in the minimum system requirements!

I'm glad that I don't really play computer games any more apart from the likes of Neverwinter Nights (original version not NWN2) and things like Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale.

 

To me these days the cost of the hardware makes upgrading on regular basis a non viable option considering that my existing hardware does everything I need it to.

I haven't yet - the most expensive card I've bought was £160. But now I'm in full time employment, I think £250 wouldn't be a problem once I've spent money on everything else I want (ie. learning to drive).

Think I paid £180 for my card last year.

 

I have done a fresh install of Vista to try it on so I might see if XP likes it better. Vista has crashed during the night for the past 2 nights ruining my torrents so I wonder if thats the problem.

 

I would buy an XBOX360 but have never managed to get used to the controllers on games machines. I only really play FPS so a KB and Mouse is my prefered weapon.

By the time I have paid all my bills etc, then I am lucky to have a £150 a month left for luxuries so things like graphics cards have to wait. Anyway its a bit hard to replace the graphics chip in a laptop.

Never been cheaper, you can build an xbox 360 beating rig for much less than £200 including a good HD.

Add to that case, psu, monitor, keyboard, harddrive, and operating system then it gets expensive. As at present I have no desktop pc, only my laptop and my Mac Mini.

Well I know this guy down the pup that says for £80 he can get you a pair of 8800GTs

 

But point taken, I have a 7900GS which is a year old, Hellgate London sucks on it, just so slow on decent quality settings. A 8600GT is about the same sort of speed for £80

 

This card will run battlefield 2141 at 1600 x 1200 (20 inch high res tft) on mid quality settings without fuss. Point being there are a lot of games out at the moment that the programers have not optimised for speed. If you can do amazing things on a xbox360 with 512mb ram and a 3 year old graphics card, getting things running smooth on a PC should be easy.

Due to the demand and lack of stock most resellers are milking the price, realistically a 8800GT 512MB should be £150-£170 tops, also the 256MB version is looking good as well should be about £120-£140.
