Advice on IP CCTV please

Hi all,

 

I'm asking here because I can't get an answer out of the manufacturer.

 

I'm installing IP CCTV very soon.

 

Cabling is already done with CAT6.

 

Was looking at Axis dome cameras and an NVR.

 

I have POE switches in all locations and will be running this on a separate VLAN.

 

Anyone have any experience of Axis with NVR's.

 

a) Do Axis cameras support VLANS?

b) Will they run with POE from a switch? (I've read that some brands of camera won't, even being POE capable, and require a separate power injector)

c) Any recommendations of brands of NVR that supports Axis cameras? (16 channels)

 

 

Any (simple) advice on configuring the VLAN (have Cisco POE smart switches connected to Netgear L2 and L3 switches)

a: yes

b: yes - most of the time but you'll need to check what POE standard the camera supports and have matching switching equipment.

Is question a) slightly irrelevant because if you untag a switch port to a specific vlan the thing hung on the end of it will just exist on the vlan regardless of whether it officially supports vlans?

B) Not always.

 

We have some Axis cameras that need the supplied PoE injector for additional features.

 

For example a few of our external cameras heaters will not work from PoE switches.

Y it is m8. Its the NVR thats going to need the VLAN, not the cameras

Depending on what model NVR you buy they deal with vlans in one of 3 ways...

 

1) they just support tags so it can exist in the camera and the management vlans

2) they have 2 network points, one for camera input, one for management

3) they don't...

Looks like budget isn't enough for Axis. Only got £3500 and need 10 cameras.

 

These look like an ok alternative

Do the cameras need night vision?

 

A little out of budget but as they aren't in stock I don't know how much the multiple discount is, but you could try and see if they will do a deal for 10 cameras for £3500 they are usually good at stuff like that.

Yes, POE works fine. VLAN works fine. We use a bit of software called Blue Iris with a big 16TB NAS supporting 25 ip cameras 3 HD and 1 PTZ Dome. At 6FPS you can keep recordings for 3 months at this setup on continuous recording.

We used to use Dedicated Micros recorders and they kept crashing the NIC on vlans and then crashing the whole unit.

We're just getting set up with Ubiquiti UniFi cameras - around £100 for a dome camera that supports 720p HD, and the software is free to install on Windows or Linux, so you can set up a machine with whatever storage you think best.
