Cheap inkjet printer?

Two of my staff have asked about printers for their rooms, i've decided on getting a couple of cheap inkjets, does anyone have any suggestions?

 

P.S. Lexmark is a no-no after my own personal one at home nuked its own firmware many moons ago

I would suggest to you to get small laser printers instead, like the Hp laserjet 1018,, why? because nowadays inkjet cartridges are getting smaller and smaller, meaning they run out quicker and you will need to be replacing them quite often, but if you still want to go ahead with inkjet printers, then I would suggest you shlud check with your supplier what HP inkjet printers they offer.

I'm with MDV on this... and I love inkjets. The consumables will kill your budget stone dead in a matter of weeks whereas a laser printer will cost very little in consumables and be cheap enough.

Primarily I'd recommend you consider anything with single ink tanks (ie: where each colour has it's own cartridge - NOT multiple colours in a single cartridge).

 

Canon printers are quite good but can be very pricey on consumables, HP's I'm not so up on as I tend to steer clear of the smaller models.

 

I guess the key thing would be to see what consumables are like before you purchase anything and as a rule, cheap printer = expensive consumables so be warned.

We're talking single PC depts, one is SEN and the other also has one PC.

 

I considered inkjets as they would also allow colour printing which would be rather handy for SEN, but i'll have a word with the staff member involved.

 

Insight do a £40 HP inkjet that i might take a chance with, and see how it goes.

Lasers dont mind if they are only used once a month, never dry out and will do 3000 pages before you need to go back to refill them.

 

Inkjets are junk.

Depending on how often they will need to print, you might want to look into the possibility of using Xerox's Solid Ink printers.

In fairness that's true if you're talking about the usual bog standard scenario, ie:

sits in a classroom, barely gets used, teacher doesn't know how to change cartridge, it sits and dies and lo you have a paper weight.

 

... but if the teacher in question uses it regularly, stores it properly during the summer (ie: somewhere out of sunlight, preferably somewhere cool) and changes the cartridges when they need to be... then they can work well.

 

All this aside, I'd still say go with the mono laser.

If you really /have/ to get an inkjet, at least get a decent one - we've just bought several HP Business Inkjet 1200Ds from Insight (£130-odd, I think). They print at a reasonable speed, in colour, duplex, take different media, have separate print heads / cartridges and a high-volume black cartridge. I figure if they do get blocked up we can simply buy a new set of print heads. I would be much happier if I could convince SMT that they don't each need a printer on their desks and that they should hire some more nice big Canon photocopier/printers that can do everything short of make toast and someone comes in three hours to fix if they go wrong.

Well in a snap change of plan due to the great information I got from you people, both deparments have plumped for Samsung Lasers, which should be ok
