Visually Impaired students and Whiteboard

Hi All,

 

Not sure if there is a solution to this but here goes; We have a visually impaired student who has a laptop from the local authority to use in school, the laptop is connected via the wireless and there are shortcuts setup for access to his user area but the laptop isnt actually on the domain.

 

The visual impairment chap who deals with the laptop and all the software has said that the student is having issues seeing the whiteboard so, to help him he wants to install VNC to connect to the teacher PC, there must be a better way of achieving this other than using VNC, also I dont realy want a VNC client on one of the PC's

 

anyone come accross this?

It's a shame it's not actually on your domain; because if you had a contract with impero you could have set the teachers PC up as a console and then the user could be set up as a client and they would see what is on the board in the live view and have no editing controls etc

 

I'm guessing something like teamviewer or join.me would be the only way to go due to the laptops set up

Wouldn't it be better for the stuff that's shown on the whiteboard be made available to the student, either via a shared area on the network, or VLE or similar? An alternative could be to use something like Impero or AB Tutor and then the Member of staff could share their screen with the student? Not sure if that works across a domain or not.

 

Is it the viewing distance that's the issue, or the content? I remember staff saying that black on white can be one of the worst colour schemes for students with impaired vision or dyslexia, and that a softer contrast sometimes helps...

Good idea !

Could have that set as a shortcut on his desktop as well, and make the folder only accessible to all staff and that one student then work can be dropped in to that folder at the start of the lesson or week depending how far in advance the lesson is planned etc

Erm, now the other suggestions are good and allowing the content be available for the student is good as they can they do what they want with it, but couldn't you just move the student closer to the whiteboard? Surely this would be easier unless it's a contrast issue as already suggested.

We have a similar student, to be honest we just set up the VNC link between his laptop and one particular teacher he has for the majority of his lessons. I'm not really worried by the VNC link. He's pretty much constantly accompanied by a TA and even with Windows on maximum magnification I'm not 100% certain he can see anything...

 

In these cases I find the path of least resistance win out (VNC).

The distance is the main issue but, the student is eye sight is quite bad so I dont think moving him closer is going to achieve much. maybe simply providing him with the materials that are being shown on the board would be the simplest route.

Does the laptop go home with the student? If it belongs to the LA could you not connect it to your domain? If you could then you could use something like iTalc (free) to display the teacher screen on the laptop. iTALC

 

We have a student with impaired sight to whom we have supplied a laptop for school use. We use Net Support School to put the teacher screen onto the laptop.

I have managed to do this using impero and a student laptop that was not on the domain. Installed impero onto the students laptop and add local user onto the impero server as a user, teachers would just broadcast their screen to the student.
