Truecrypt is not available for Windows 7

Hi Guys,

 

I understand that TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues in Windows 7, I have installed Truecrypt on all teachers Laptops Last years.. untill i read that TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues on their websites..

 

Is there any other software that does Truecrypt??? I understnad there is Bitlocker.. but dont know if that work like Truecrypt..

 

Any suggestion guys.

I understnad there is Bitlocker.. but dont know if that work like Truecrypt..

 

IIRC Bitlocker needs a TPM chip for W7 unless you want to use a USB drive for authentication (because staff will never lose it...). On Windows 8.1 it can be used much like TrueCrypt with a pre-boot password. With TPM on either 7 or 8 your users won't know that Bitlocker is in use unless they try to pull their HDD out and copy from it. Not sure which versions you need - possibly Enterprise on 7, maybe lower on 8.

 

Where feasible, I prefer Bitlocker as the initial encryption seems faster and (if the machines have a TPM chip) there's no need for an extra password. However, as most of the laptops I deal with are W7 with no TPM chip, I'm still using TrueCrypt on the grounds that some encryption is better than none and because I suspect that the termination of the project was down to pressure from governmental forces.

I heard it was fine, they just said that to stop people using it.

The previous versions are fine - just not the latest. Even with that for school use it's still fine - it's more for people who have something to hide from the authorites.

 

Core i5s with AES on chip work very well with Bitlocker. I have an i7 with AES and use Bitlocker to encrypt my second HDD on my laptop which is a 1TB spinning rust and it encrypted fast.

 

For my staff I use Sophos Safeguard bought in via the LEA. On platter drives it is very slow. However stick a SSD in and encrypt with Safeguard and you can't tell it's encrypted it is lightning fast.
