New boiler recommendations

I need some help guys, we are looking at a new boiler and have been quoted 4 different boilers - worcester 24i, worcester 28i l, ideal logic plus 24 and ideal logic plus 30.

 

I was wondering if anyone else has had a boiler fitted recently and could express their views on them. I am really confused on which one to get.

 

The house is a wimpy built 3 bed semi which will have double radiators in each room barring kitchen and hall.

I've had two Viessmann Vitodens 100-W (I think!) fitted in the last two years, one for underfloor heating/hot water in the cave, one in the house. Both seem to do the job and haven't given any problems.

Would recommend Worcester, we've had one for 11 years with no problems at all and works really well. I've never heard of Ideal Logic, so can't comment on those.

I've got a Worcester 24i. I had it installed in 2002, so I guess it's OK. The only problems I encountered were a failed fan (about £100) and a failed relay on the board (which coincidentally controlled the fan). Based on a sample size of 1, I would say it's OK considering how much it's been used.

The Worcester may or may not be the best, but every plumber knows them and it's important to consider the availability of parts years down the line.

 

That said, many sister recently had a new condenser boiler which are supposed to be much more efficient.

I've got an Intergas Combi Compact HRE (can't remember the size - it lives in the loft). It's about 5 years old and I've had no problems with it.

Worcester all the way. Plumbing wisdom says fit the smallest one that's appropriate for you house because it's better to run boilers flat out than below capacity.

Vaillant have a good reputation, but our worcester has been very reliable and looks pretty well built. Our boiler service guy likes them.

I had mine done a few years ago. Four quotes, and they ALL said "go for Vallient or Woster Bosch". Sold the house a year after the Bosch went in, so I can't really comment on long term though!

All my quotes are saying go ideal at the moment as the logic 30 plus has 7 year parts and labour warranty

My wifes uncle and cousin are heating engineers, at our old house they put in a Veissmann, at the new one we have an Ideal Logic plus, both have been brilliant. Veissmann are more expensive (purchase and parts), but their control seems slightly better.

 

In terms of the different models, just depends on how big your house is as to which model - how many rooms, are your showers mains fed or electric, any additional bathrooms/toilets?

We have a lounge diner 7m x 3.5m, hall 2.5m x 4m, landing, bedroom 1 3.6m x 3.5m, bedroom 2 3.5m x 3.4m and bedroom 3 2.5m x 2m. Only 1 bathroom and keeping its radiator and kitchen has a kickboard fan radiator. The shower at the mo is feed from attic, i think but will be mains powered. Ive managed to get hold of double radiators too.

 

Im putting the original 2 doubles back in the lounge (2000 x 300) and hall (1600 x 600) but got the following to play with too..

2x 1200 x 600

1x 1000 x 600

1x 900 x 600

1x 600 x 600

1x 500 x 600

As others have said - Vaillant or Worcester - Which always recomment them for reliability. We had our 30 year old Vaillant replaced last year with another one - it was still working, but parts were getting very difficult to find.

 

I seem to recall that there is a calculator on the Vaillant site somewhere that works out the size of boiler you should get.

We have an ideal 24 and it works absolutely fine.

 

It was fitted around 2 years ago.

If it helps, our house has a 15yo Worcester boiler and it's still going. When we buy a new boiler we will buy Worcester without hesitation. Personally I'd go with the 28i.

 

We have a 3 bedroom Semi, 1950's No-fines jobbie. I expect the 28i will be perfect. You might be able to get away with the 24i but honestly, I'd go with the 28i if I were you.
