Live 2012 server upgrade 2012 r2?

Just out of interest has anyone done a 2012 to 2012 upgrade?

 

Or would it be better to remove any roles and wipe and restart?

depends what the server does. You could also consider migrating roles, distributing roles. Ensure you have a good backup!.

Yeah, didn't take too long. I vaguely recall following a set of instructions/best practice from MS - can't remember what they were but I would imagine it would have involved deactivating the AD DS roles etc before starting.

I did this with my 2012 DC, and a few VM's I had running 2012 without a problem.

 

For the hyper-v servers I moved the VM's to another host, and did a fresh install of 2012 r2.

So am I safe to "upgrade" my R2 install over 2012? What if any precautions I should take?

If the machine isn't a DC, I'd take a full system image and backups of any role config files (e.g. NPS has a powershell module to export/import the config)

I had full system backups before I ran the upgrades, but there were no issues.

I tired running the upgrade. Ran though it. A few reboots and I'm sure it blue screens and starts restoring back to server 2012 (non r2)

 

I've mad sure there more than 16gb space free.

I did it on one of our servers with no problem at all (a file server). Tried it on another box and same result as you @newpersn - Lot's of blue screens and it then restores back to 2012 (non R2) can't restart setup after it has rolled back either...

My guessing it could be the raid controller.

Have a look at this KB article - Yes it's for vista but it gives a large list of logs

Had a quick look through the logs and found lots of the following: Failed to unload offline registry

 

Do you have antivirus/antispyware programs running whilst the upgrade is in progress? If you do then try uninstalling it and attempt the upgrade again.

Done 2008R2 to 2012R2 in home lab on 2 DC's

 

Failed first time so I ran the Prep manually and it wouldn't download the pre-upgrade requirement. Once done these manually it went through OK.

 

The only issue I had was that it needed activating straight away, I noticed when the DC's started shutting down

 

Make sure you are happy you have backups in place.

Tired again now. Remove Sophos and System Center AV, (unsure why Sophos was on there but now removed)

I'm assuming drive D: is your drive C: when not booted into winpe.

How. Who ever set the bloody server up only set a 40 gb drive. And f is 300 odd gb.

 

Where do I start looking for space?

 

When in windows there 21gb of space on c.

I've used the GParted live bootable disc to re-size system partitions before.

 

GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD

 

Make sure you have a good backup first thou!

Could you not use shrink on the larger volume and then extend the smaller one?

 

Or is gpaeted better? Will it read the raid volumes?
