It runs the same software, and still has 512MB RAM; but James and the team have made the following key improvements: More GPIO. The GPIO header has grown to 40 pins, while retaining the same pinout for the first 26 pins as the Model B. More USB. We now have 4 USB 2.0 ports, compared to 2 on the Model B, and better hotplug and overcurrent behaviour. Micro SD. The old friction-fit SD card socket has been replaced with a much nicer push-push micro SD version. Lower power consumption. By replacing linear regulators with switching ones we’ve reduced power consumption by between 0.5W and 1W. Better audio. The audio circuit incorporates a dedicated low-noise power supply. Neater form factor. We’ve aligned the USB connectors with the board edge, moved composite video onto the 3.5mm jack, and added four squarely-placed mounting holes.

localzuk Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 (edited) I wonder if this means they'll now be working on a new generation, rather than refining the old generation? Increased CPU speed and more RAM would be a great thing. Maybe improved graphics processing somehow? To be fair though, main reason I want it to be improved is to use it as a cheap thin client which doesn't stutter like the current gen. Edited July 14, 2014 by localzuk
Garacesh Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Just ordered mine! I didn't bother with the original release because of the USB issues. This solves that, so I'm more than happy to order one. Going to let the head of Computing have a bit of a play on it when it arrives, see if it's any good for them. They were looking to get some of the original ones but nothing came of it.
zag Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Its a nice minor upgrade indeed. Love the fact it uses even less power. They say on their forums that a major SOC upgrade would be needed for a version 2.0 Raspberry Pi and it doesnt exist yet from Bromcom. The current timetable is a couple of years until that can be designed and packed into a brand new Raspberry Pi.

Did some tests - the GPIO16 line now looks like it doesn't light the ACT LED anymore (the GPIO16 line is now on the expansion connector) - so ACT looks like it's generated by actual IO to the SDCard. There is a RUN jumper that I'm guessing is the same as the P6 jumper on the model B - a reset switch. Very handy to link up.

Namely "Case" (of which mine has arrived, the B+ itself has not..) Looks like I'm going to be lurking around this subforum for quite some time I've heard some weird and wonderful uses for RPi's in times gone by.. I'm wondering how feasible it would be to turn a Pi into some kind of diagnostic tool.. (Or, heck, maybe a small-scale PenTest device, but that's likely not plausible).. If all else fails, it can be a media centre xD
