FN-GM Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Hiya, I am trying to get my head around Youtube for schools. Am I right in thinking it can be used to allow pre approved videos to be watched by students? Is it school specific? How can it be enforced with the filtering? Cheers
localzuk Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Youtube for Schools works as such: You set up your filtering solution to add either a header or append a string to all youtube.com URLS (and you ban https connections to youtube). You then add videos you want students to be able to view to playlists (under the account you signed up to Youtube for schools) and they are automatically white-listed, along with those determined by Youtube for Schools to be educational (a limited selection exists already). That's it really. However, I believe the process is very broken at the moment, so signing up will not work I think! 1

sparkeh Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Anyone done this with Smoothwall please? Yep, once you sign up there are instructions from YouTube which give you your unique code, then look at Smoothwall article 000001589 and it tells you what to do on your SW box. 1
TechMonkey Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 It works well with Smoothwall. I set it up. The only issue is that the implementation their end is a bit annoying. So I found our school channel was filtered out by YouTubeEdu (so no way to publish what pupils can look at at) but a direct link to a video I had whitelisted was Ok. Couldn't search for the video though. Another annoyance is no way to whitelist a channel and the process to submit a channel to be whitelisted was broken. All fun and games.
Joanne Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Yeah I have been trying to sign up to this for the last couple of months, but no avail. OH WELL! I've just put an override on the page, so teachers can override the filter for 30mins.
