Papercut and follow me printing on a non-MFP device

I'm currently investigating implementing Papercut 'follow me printing' and retro fitting it to non MFP device.

 

Has anyone done this either with biometric readers or card readers?

 

I've had a quotation at the moment but its massively expensive.

I've done it with an old laptop and a barcode reader. It worked ok, we only had a basic scanner though so staff had to pick it up to scan etc.

Did you follow any instructions to get this hooked up?

Just the standard release station instructions. All I had to do was in the release station config enable card authentication and add the relevant info to each staff members account.

Does the printer have to be connected through the computer or does it work through a standard TCP/IP port share off of a print server?

As long as the printer shows up in papercut it should work. In the release station config file there's a section called find-me-printing. You can specify which printer to release on there.

You could use the web based release software or mobile release.

Have the printer on the network and setup as a release station, you get 1 free license with PaperCut MF I think, other than that you will need licenses. It's just a PC running a front end and that will act the same as the software built in to the machines when its embedded in.
