abillybob Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Cheers guys it will be my new machine for general tasks I do from day to day I currently have a 2011 MBP with an i5 8GB Ram 5400RPM HDD and HD 3000 Graphics as you can imagine it struggles when I have half a million things to do at once and that stupid crazy Apple wheel sits there for a good 20 minutes and won't let me click anything. @SiliconAlley_Sam I will respond now cheers @ICTDirect_Dave, it's for the school buddy!

Couldn't you just fit an SSD? It will be a lot cheaper than a Retina MacBook Pro and would make quite a difference. 1

I have tried one we have a spare SSD in my room and apart from start up times not much else changed unbelievably! It seems it more to do with processing power and the GPU when I'm making movies and stuff for the school! Silly question, why a Mac? I need Apple Configurator and Apple Remote desktop if I didn't I would t have one!

Does it need to be a laptop ie a mac book pro or can it be an iMac or Mac Pro etc , I was gonna say mac mini but then those don't have a decent GPU etc

Since you're a heavy multi-tasker, would it be worth getting 16GB RAM from the start? You won't be able to upgrade the RAM later if you discover you need more than 8GB because it is soldered to the motherboard. I doubt suppliers will have anything other than the base-configurations below in stock. Getting the Mac built-to-order would be better since you could choose a faster CPU, larger PCIe SSD and more RAM on the entry-level rMBP to save a bit of money.

Toucan not only sell Macs, they will also set them up and support them for you as well. Their techs are excellent. Plus they'll be able to access educational pricing for you as well. 1
