These collections of photographs, paintings, letters and a range of artifacts tell stories of a global conflict that changed the course of history. In June 1914, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria, set off a wave of political turmoil across Europe which led to the First World War - one of the great tragedies of the 20th century. Empires, monarchies and countries across several continents underwent political revolution and tremendous social and cultural change, while millions of individual soldiers lost their lives as the new weapons of war took their toll.
