Bananas Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Out of curiousity do any of you run a virtual Sims server, if so on what hardware and what do you have allocated to the VM? Ta
PotNoodleTech Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Yes did do for years until the LEA centralised all sims servers into their cluster. Allocated 4 x 3.16Ghz vCPU, 16GB RAM and HDD's were 16x 146GB SAS drives in Raid 50. Performance was outstanding. Since it's been centralised, performance is not so outstanding 1
sister_annex Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 we run ours across a couple of servers (SIMS Files etc and the SIMS DB) the SIMS File server is standard 2012 with 8Gb Dynamic RAM 2vCPU the DB server is 2012 with 24Gb RAM and 4vCPU all running on a failover cluster of 5 hyper-v hosts 1
Jamman960 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I virtualised ours fairly recently, its currently running on 2 2.4ghz vcores's with 10gb ram allocated and 200gb storage(sas, raid 5), we're a mid sized prep school so its not being pushed all that hard. 1
Boredguy Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 We virtualised our SIMS server in September since it was still on a 2003 box. Now is it running with 8vCPU (E5-2620 2Gz Processors) and 12Gb Ram on Win 2012. The OS is on one datapool with another OS container and the SIMS database is on a second datapool on it's own dedicated drive array. Touch wood it's all been going fine. Had I more funds last year, I'd have increased the Ram in the host from 16Gb but as it's only running 2 VM's it's not under too much strain. 1
3s-gtech Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Our has been virtual for 18 months or so. Kind of a cheat, because it's the only VM on the host. It has 2 quad core Opterons at 2.4GHz, 30GB of RAM allocated, and it all runs on an 8 disk RAID 10 array (which is fast). 1
vikpaw Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 (edited) Yes, for many years and it works a treat. Basic spec' in sig'. Taking a snapshot just before doing an upgrade is invaluable. It's one of 5 VMs on a blade with 2 6core procs and 32GB. All are around the same spec' so we've well over allocated resources and it still runs fine, so long as it thinks it has all that RAM More: 120GB system (inc DB) disk and 80GB data (files) disk - all on locally attached storage with some high level of RAID. Bananas Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 Cool just a bit aggrieved that he's nicking "my" Sims server to virtualise the rest of the school. Nah thinking about it at least if it blows up it's his problem not mine, i'll just go home and say call me when it's fixed LOL
rad Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 yes we do... no idea of spec, it "just works" It runs on ESi hosts 1
