kennysarmy Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I've secured some funding to replace some older Allied Telesis switches some of which are over 10 years old. I've got a few HP 2510G-48 around the network but don't think they are now available. I think the closest is the HP 2530-48G 48 Port Gigabit Switch. Has anyone used this and can vouch for it? Each will also require a new HP Networking Gigabit SX-LC Mini-GBIC Module - so I was going to go for the J4858C - I'm not sure if there are other options on this.... Any comments or advice appreciated. Cheers
localzuk Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I have a question - if you're going to provide 1Gbps to each endpoint, surely you'll want more than 1Gbps on your uplink? 1
Achandler Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 We have a couple of them they are perfectly fine. We replaced some 13 year old cisco switches with them. I bought them from a place that looks extremely dubious but they all arrived and they accept purchase orders, pm if you want to know where, they were much cheaper. Personally we bought 2920 for top of cabinets at remote locations then these to fill them, the need for more then 1gb uplink is all very well and good but most people fibre probably doesn't support it. 1
kennysarmy Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 Thanks for the responses. We may just go for the standard HP 2530-48 48 Port Gigabit Switch!
Millgate Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Morning Kenny, If you need a bit of advice on this, I can get out HP Networking guy to give you a call and talk through a few options with you? Luke

AlexB Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Aye, we usually go for the grey HP stock, it is the same switch, but from another county and a lot cheaper.
snoerre Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Aye, we usually go for the grey HP stock, it is the same switch, but from another county and a lot cheaper. Interesting, do you have some sources for me?
AlexB Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Sadly the company I used were bought up and the new company is an hp partner and won't do grey...
Millgate Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Interesting, do you have some sources for me? HP are clamping down on a lot of grey kit suppliers. However, we can supply you legit kit for the same price if not cheaper by either using Public Sector bids or raising a bid of our own. Let me know what you're after and I'll give you a quote Luke
IrritableTech Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 I have a question - if you're going to provide 1Gbps to each endpoint, surely you'll want more than 1Gbps on your uplink? You can trunk more than one port together, either using J4858C modules or copper ports.
Michael Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 The HP 2530-48G is a nice switch, so no problems there - but I agree with others, no 10Gbps unlink, but this may/may not be a problem. It's still pretty difficult at the moment to exhaust a 1Gbps connection consistently without some decent kit!
