Need a new NAS server, this any good? Or what would you buy?

We have an ageing RM NAS 1 in RAID 5 that i am looking to replace. It is used to host our shared drives RMShared Documents and RMStaff so needs to be able to support multiple access from the network from students and staff. Opening and saving files to it.

 

It could be accessed by up to 200 people at a time but would rarely get that high.

 

I have been recommended this QNAP TS-670 PRO 6TB (6 x 1TB WD Red) 6 Bay Desktop NAS (TS-670PRO/6TB) - www.misco.co.uk do you think this would do the job?

 

Or have any other recommendations?

I Like qnap - however we have just bought 2 of these LenovoEMC px4-400r Network Storage | Network Storage Solutions from LenovoEMC | Lenovo (US) for a very good price, one is loaded with 16tb, the other is driveless at the moment to allow us to reuse our existing 4tb disks.

I have a Qnap TS-869 Pro here loaded with WD Red's. It works really well for us, fully featured and fast. I have it running RAID 6.

Ok, about to ask a really basic question here. The NAS servers i have dealt with have VGA and we've just installed windows server 2003 or 2008 on. I notice the synology doesn't have a VGA port. How is this managed just via a web portal? Is it possible to install windows server on it or is that not necessary? We need to do all the usual like access rights etc

mines on a web portal to a win 7 pc, no real need to use server 2003/08 unless you want specific software works fine as a file server shared drive on it's own we also use buffalo NAS drives at work same principle but smaller and cheaper.

 

So you can still do all of the active directory groups on the folders etc?

Something like the Thecus N8900 would offer redundancy on network, power supply and the DOM (NVR for Raid config). We use them via iSCSI for user storage as a backend to a windows server supporting many hundreds of concurrent users.
