Classic Start Bar Windows 7

Bit of a weird one but had a couple of students call round to say their Start bar now looks like this:

 

 

Somehow they've managed to enable the Classic theme but Control Panel/Personalise is completely locked down. Not sure how to turn it back, any ideas?

Rarely anything to worry about - happens when video drivers throw a wobbly for whatever reason and revert to "basic" mode. Also seems to happen when low on memory.

That's when it goes from Aero to Basic.

 

Used to get this in XP years ago. Just dumped the profile and it sorted it,

Just tried renaming the profile folder and logging in but still looks the same even after a fresh log in

You can't do that on Windows 7 like you can on XP. You will need to delete the folder the proper way.

I did it on the server end. Just renamed the profile so it would force it to create a new one on log in.

This also happens when the 'Themes' service stops. Try restarting the service and logging off and back on. You'll notice that it's not quite the classic theme, it's much more washed out which usually means it's the themes service.

Like I say you can't do it like that in Windows 7. There are registry entries the logons looks at.
