Survey your pupils for views on your IT....and what questions to ask?

I've been tasked with putting up a survey on our VLE to gauge the pupils views on our IT provision.

 

I was wondering if anyone had done anything similar and if so what questions do you think need asking.

 

I'm worried about making the questions too specific or too vague but think ones where they have to pick a set response might be best, along the lines of strongly disagree, disagree, agree etc

Do you have a student council? Attend one of their meetings and ask for a general view of how they see it/what they'd like and then base the wider survey on that input.

 

Things like:

 

Do you think you have sufficient access to computers during the school day?

Which subjects do you use IT in/not use IT in?

What subjects make good use of IT in the classroom from a teaching (things teacher does) and learning (things you do in the lesson) perspective?

How easy is it for you to transfer work between home and school? Can you think of anything we could do to improve it?

Do we give you enough information/instruction on how to use the IT in school? What would you like more information/help on?

I don't want it to be too teaching orientated though - it's not a survey to find out who or who is nt using ICT - more to find out if the students think things are reliable and we offer them what they need.....

Ask them questions about if they know that they can do 'abc', 'def' and 'xyz' with the computers.

 

You'll never include all the questions you want on there If you can, try to force them to actually pick an option that can be graphed and use as few "free text" questions as possible.

 

 

Make sure to ask them how often they find they can't log on to a PC, whether there are keys missing or some other form of damage. Etc.

Only thing that comes to mind is an array question. Either 1 -5 (or 10), 1 being not very or agree to disagree, on aspects of the IT department. For example:

 

how approachable is the department

how well do issues get resolved

how good do you feel the IT resources are in the school

 

It will be quicker for them to answer and hold their attention better. You can then include a free text box for any suggestions or added questions.

We asked

 

a reliability question regarding our email, vle and network access from within school and from home.

 

what device they mainly use to access the VLE

had they ever acccesed the VLE whilst away from home on holiday

were they ever unable to complete homework due to not having the right software at home

did they think too much homework relies upon computer access

how they transfer files between home and school

did they think they had enough computer access during the school day

did they ever run out of printing credits

had they connected their own device to the school network for personal use

had they connected their own device to the school network for class use

do they regularly bring a device to school capable of connecting to the schools wi-fi
