USB Printer into Network

I need to turn a non-network printer into a network one. I have used a piece of software in the past which is Linux based, can be ran on any old computer to provide network connectivity for a parallel printer. I can not remember what this software was called, nor can I find it through searches. Does any body know what I may be talking about, or any other quick fix suggestions to get the printer on the network?

 

The printer I wish to use is not parallel but USB, the piece of software I'm talking about may or may not support USB but I'm looking at the options.

Could you not share the printer in the properties?

 

We have that done on one of our USB printers.

Both of the above options are things I have looked at. I didn't want to rely on a users computer being on to share the USB printer but I may well do this as a short term quick fix. USB print server may well also be an option, but I don't currently have any and needed a quick fix solution for today!

be careful to ensure the thing is not a GDI / host based printer as these require the windows host to render the job.

I've used these for a few old printers when we changed to papercut, cheap and does the job. Only niggle is they are set to a static IP address on delivery but fully support DHCP once switched.

I think you mean CUPS.. we use it here on our Linux servers to deploy Printers.
