nick3young Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Hi All, Has anyone managed to get the Dropbox client working on RM CC4? I have installed it but after attempting to login, it just loops back around to the login screen again with no error. I suspect this is down to some strange RM permission or profile setting somewhere. Dropbox relies on the %APPDATA% and %HOMEPATH% variables. When logging in, it sets up a folder at %HOMEPATH% (which on a normal computer is C:\Users\username); on RM %HOMEPATH% points to the root of C:. It could be this causing an issue or it might be another RM setting somewhere. Any ideas anyone? Thanks Nick
Sylv3r Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Never could get it to work. I use it for myself pointing to a folder on my C:\Dropbox on my PC, but it doesn't sync my N:\
nick3young Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Were you able to get it working on drive C though Sylv3r? I can't get it to login at all.....
TomFreeman Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Mine worked linked through to a folder on my D: drive in my machine up until last friday, don't know whats changed, i've checked and nothing really has!! I've tried uninstalling and re-installing but to no avail. Just loops, goes back to login screen, but on my dropbox account online it ends up showing the computer connected.

Are you connecting through a Proxy ?
nick3young Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 I know the question wasn't direct at me but yes, I am. I tried installing Dropbox on a 'vanilla' laptop (none-RM) going through the same connection/proxy.... and it works fine when set to 'auto-detect'. This makes me think that it must be an RM permission/setting somewhere causing the problem. It might be worth noting that if I set the proxy to manual on my RM CC4 station, after attempting to login, it automatically reverts back to 'auto-detect'. I again suspect this is a permission setting somewhere which is preventing me from making this change permanent (I am logged on as admin)

nick3young Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Yep, I have tried manually changing permissions and the suggestions in both of those threads (e.g. firewall changes). No luck sadly.
mdrabble Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 We advised staff who wanted to use drop box to use the web app, it works and no installation needed.
TomFreeman Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Yes we are using a proxy, it used to work fine on auto detect settings, i've tried manually inputting them as well. My permissions seem all ok. Web app is no good for me really, i edit lots of different files and want them to sync without the need of me manually uploading them.
nick3young Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 It is really odd. I have a call open with RM now so I will update with any suggestions....
sted Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 sounds like a problem ki had yesterday roaming profiels but everything is redirected insall dropbox fine but it just wont login. The older version crashes windows explorer the newer one accepts details goes away then asks for details again. No proxy server in the school using a netasq box thats transparant (gets permissions from ad). Vanilla network. Wonder if it dosent like roaming profiles possibly
nick3young Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Yep, my money is on roaming profiles Sted. Just out of interest, if you go to 'run' and type %homepath% before hitting enter, what does it bring up?
Sylv3r Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 @nick3young yeah it works no problem for me via the C:\ going through our smoothwall box. Been sitting working for around 18months now and I have the latest version installed of the dropbox client.
nick3young Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 ... and you're just on a bog standard CC4 network Sylv3r? Where does your %homepath% point to?
nick3young Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Just an update on this.... RM said in the call I opened up to: "Change the application data to point to %userprofile%\ApplicationData instead of N:\My setting\Application Data" I've not tested myself as the requirement fizzled out. But hope it helps someone.
minature_hero Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) Hi. I'm having this same problem installing the latest version of Dropbox on a PC. It was installed previously with no problems on a CC4 Win2003 domain but our new CC4.5 network doesn't want to let it install. The dropbox login just loops round in a circle despite them emailing me that a new computer was added to the dropbox profile. The user is configured with a laptop with personal reg and no station security. Did anyone ever find a solution to this? All help appreciated. Thanks Forgot to put - the user is a privileged user on the laptop. Edited April 13, 2015 by minature_hero
Crumpet Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 We don't install it for users here. I think the last time i did it was a while back, i gave the user admin rights temporarily to install the software. Then obviously revoked the admin rights afterwards.
Hawkeyez Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 RM's reponse once we knew it was a CC4 issue. On further investigation on issues reported for Dropbox, I could understand the following findings were made. Sorry to inform you that these application are not supported on CC4 Windows7. 1. Windows 7: The applications are not compatible with CC4 Windows 7. Because in CC4 Windows 7, the Application Data folder is moved to network drive and the Dropbox app requires "Application Data" folder to be on Local drive for Windows 7. 2. Windows 8.1: The application requires the sync location to be on the local drive (default location: C:\Users\[user name]\Dropbox) hence the sync folder cannot be accessed while logged in as a restricted user. The app will work with full functionality for Admin users on a Windows 8.1 workstation. Many thanks, Dany
Ephelyon Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Try this in a user logon script: mklink /d %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Dropbox %HomeDrive%\Dropbox Or similar...
minature_hero Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Thanks for your replies. I've logged a call with RM as well so I'll see what they say - I guess it'll be the same. There must have been some changes between CC4.2 and 4.5 as it was working before our upgrade and the appdata folder was on the home area. I always move the sync location to a folder on the local hard disk but it won't let me get that far to do that.
Sylv3r Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 It's an issue with the latest version of Dropbox. If you are on the RM Communities, have a search for dropbox. Theres a thread that mentions a previous version that will install fine. use something like FileHippo.com - Download Free Software to download the working version and install it. Everything should go through then it will auto update to the latest dropbox version which will work.
