Long story short, Advantech ARK-3390-1S6A1E computer used for a KIOSK had a boot issue, missing or corrupt NTFS.SYS file. Fixed that by booting to command prompt copying file from Windows XP Disk. After restart, computer froze at Windows XP splash screen. Booted to Windows XP disc, effected repair. Same results. Ran CHKDSK from Windows XP Disc and now the computer boots to "Windows Product Activation" dialog box. "This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Please ask a computer administrator to activate Windows on this computer" I click OK, "Windows XP Logging off..." screen and then back to same activation dialog. Click OK, same results over and over again. I tried booting to "Safe Mode" and get the same results. No matter what I try, I cannot get past the dialog box regardless of safe mode options or regular boot. I can use a Bart's PE boot disc if necessary to get in an edit any files I need to. Any suggestions for help would be greatly appreciated.

What we are saying is that you should install Win 7 at least due to the fact that XP is now out of maintenance with MS. Ben 2

speckytecky Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I'll third that. Interesting to see the general sentiment of the replies is Windows 7 no mention of the horrid Windows 8! I'm a one mandate band in my school with some 200 client devices - no budget for replacement kit so recently I've spent a heap of time upgrading memory and OS from XP to Windows 7. Delighted to say XP is now history in our school. Windows XP is Dead Long live Windows 7!

The manufacturer of the KIOSK as well as the manufacturer of software solution (customized database) have since gone out of business. Since both are gone, if I cannot get this computer recovered, the owner will have to buy new KIOSK (outdoor kiosk, minimum $12,000) and new software solution (minimum $10,000). Why XP, trying to save some coin for my customer. Thank you for your time.

If I understand the data sheet for that machine correctly, that's a Windows XP Embedded machine - support should last until January 2016. You could try booting off a Windows XP Embedded boot CD, if there is such a thing. What does the kisok machine do - does it just present a set of information menus or something? How big is the screen? Depending on how the kiosk software works, you could try and copy the software off on to a working Windows XP (or Windows 7 / 8 might be a better option) machine - copy the actual executable from the harddrive of the current kiosk machine.
plexer Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 To setup embedded yourself you just install xp pro on the machine and then run the xp embedded component designer app to set it up. I would try and get the files that run the app off the machine and test it to see if you can get it to work on a more modern os 7 etc... first if it does stick that on the kiosk or on a new one. Whilst I appreciate you are trying to save them some money they will have to upgrade in the future and any additional time you put in to it to save xp is just a time and money sink. Ben 1
