Post Office to deliver broadband

The Post Office is to launch a national broadband service, using its 14,000 stores around the country to attract mostly older customers who have not yet taken up the service.

 

Broadband provision has become increasingly competitive and the Post Office said it would target people who wanted to pay in cash at its stores and customers between 50 and 65-years-old who are going online for the first time.

 

The service will launch on Monday, October 29, and the group said it hoped to sign up to 600,000 telecoms customers by April 2008 and 1.2 million by April 2010.

 

The Post Office, which is part of Royal Mail group, said it would offer speeds of up to 8 megabits per second through its five-year wholesale deal with BT which will provide the network and other support.

 

"Until now, some significant groups in society have missed out on all the Internet has to offer purely because broadband is perceived as a complicated luxury," Alan Cook, managing director of the Post Office, said in a statement.

 

He said the group would benefit from the trust older customers already have in the Post Office while a 9 million pound marketing campaign will aim to increase wider awareness.

 

A recent report by telecoms regulator Ofcom said a quarter of all British Internet users were over the age of 50. The growth in broadband has been driven recently by competing offers from groups such as satellite TV group BSkyB, Virgin Media, BT and Carphone Warehouse.

Like the post office... your broadband won't start to work until lunchtime of every day. Even then, this will happen on totally random days and will be congested with so many pensioners browsing SAGA's website, you will just say f*ck it and not bother using it

All outgoing packets must be stored in your router's memory ready to be collected at set intervals. Incoming packets will be delivered to your router in a similar fashion.

 

Ok this is just getting stupid now. Next they'll be sending out USB modems shaped like a postbox
