USB blocked

At one of the schools we have just took over to offer support too the IT suite has a policy where USB sticks cannot be plugged in. We tried going in as a local admin but we still can't get any USB sticks to work in any of the machines. Does anyone know a way of getting round this as we are a bit stumped until we can get this to work.

Is this on the front panel? They are connected to the motherboard? Perhaps they were left unplugged to save the trouble of blocking them.

All the USB ports are connected to the motherboard first thing that we checked.

run rsop.msc/gpresult see if its blocked via gpo?

sophos can block usb sticks

I used to have an ADM that stopped the usbstore.sys from loading... Most USB things worked except thumb drives. Do mice and kbs still work? (Win XP Only)

 

I also have a no new hardware policy on my windows 7 boxes (GPO) that won't allow any new hardware. (even moving the kbd and mouse from socket to socket won't work) They don't even come on.

In the past I've used a GPO to restrict the drive letters pupils had access to so you could check that. Hide Specific Drives Although to be fair I think it was XP I did that on and it was a long time ago now.

Tis' strange that you cannot access as a local admin, have you also tried booting in Safemode or even trying to boot to the USB from the BIOS (this will show if it's actually been blocked through the BIOS - difficult but possible)
