Sam_Brown Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 At the moment our students have ProPlus licenses assigned in Office 365 which enables them to sign in and use the Office 365 iPad Apps. Staff only have the A2 licenses which I believe allows them to view documents in the app but not edit or create them. What's the cheapest and easiest way to get Staff able to use the iPad apps? I assume assigning them ProPlus licenses is illegal as they are designed for Students only. So are there are alternatives apart from purchasing A3 licenses for staff? Marshall_IT Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 What I'm considering for next time I renew my Licences is dropping on site office and assigning a3 for staff. The only thing I'm concerned about is well I lose products like visio which I currently get.
Mayki5 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 It's perfectly fine to assign Office ProPlus to your staff, as long as it's Office ProPlus for Faculty licences. They run at £1.70 per user, rather than the £3.40 per user of the A3 plan.

But £1.70 per staff is cheaper than I pay for on site office.

Might not be that much cheaper and if you lose the downgrade rights and extra products like visio or publisher.. Maybe not worth it. I'll be having a long chat with my licensing partner next year I think!
AngryTechnician Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 It's not really £1.70 x 12 x FTE either. It's £1.70 x 12 x however many staff you want to licence. You don't have to licence all your staff in the same way you do for EES/OVS. You only need enough licences to cover the staff who need it, as you assign an individual licence to each user in the O365 console. The user has to sign in to Office with their O365 account for it to activate, and because of that I don't think you get downgrade rights as earlier version don't support this licensing method.

You would also loose the free ProPlus for your students as you have to have the active EES agreement to be eligible.

Looking at the bottom of the page for my first link I believe you are still eligible for Student ProPlus if you have ProPlus "institution-wide for all your faculty/staff". Unsure if you can get license for that through EES. Believe you can.

MS are giving me a call next week directly to discuss it and best way forward so will let you guys know what the result of. My own opinion is if we're fully covered for Office under EES and students get the iPAD access free under ProPlus staff should also get the same access which is what I'll put across to them.

In the end the result was about how they were trying to move to subscription based for everyone so basically weren't interested in trying to fix the issue. Bit disappointing. In the end I said that if we couldn't get staff using the iPad App for Office we'd be forced to move to Google Docs in which case he said he'd get back to me... Still waiting.

Told me the best bet was to get rid of EES Office completely and to move to O365 Subscriptions instead for staff.

Yep confirmed A2 does not let them log into the Office App. How do I get ProPlus? I only see options for Exchange online and A2
Sam_Brown Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 First of all I don't know what the Exchange Online License entitles you to exactly. I can guess! But never used it myself. However for the ProPlus... You need to ask for it from whoever your reseller is that sorts out your licensing agreement. It's free and you just order a bulk lot to cover all your students. Then it will get added to your agreement and if you go on the Microsoft Volume Licensing site under Licenses > Relationship Summary > Agreement > Product Keys you'll find a key for O365 ProPlus Open for Student OSA. Once you've got that key if you go to... https://portal.microsoftonline.com/Commerce/ProductKeyStart.aspx On the right hand side is an option to sign in with your existing O365 Admin account and it will add the licenses to your O365 setup. 1
GrumbleDook Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 There are also some interesting things that happen when a home device, logged in on an O365 account on the A2 plan, tries to buy the O365 home premium package so that at least they have the active iPad app at home (with the other benefits). If the purchase is made directly with MS through a family's personal LiveID then that is what it gets registered to. If purchased on the iPad it 'can' register it against the AppleID ... and if that is not associated with MS services at all then it is a pain to get it sorted. In the end I got a refund from Apple and went direct to MS. MS Education are looking into this as well and there will be advice around the whole area coming soon. 1

I'm going to test it out later to see if the Office Apps work under this license for a student. I was told that for teachers we would have to purchase the A3 plan but its far too much money in my opinion, especially as its an ongoing cost.

It's cheaper but like you say still an ongoing cost and I'm not sure if it comes with all the features A3 does. Worth investigating. Someone above pointed out that moving to O365 completely and not taking out any standard EES Office Licensing might be the way to go but not too sure how I feel about that.
