Lion93 Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Went to a Capita SUS yesterday and they announced that SOLUS2 will be no longer supported after the Autumn 2014 release and will therefore not authorsie any updates after that. (Spring 2015 onwards) Did anyone know about this? If not, will you be able to get all your schools on SOLUS3 before Spring 2015?

I have known they wanted to get rid of it for some time.
zag Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Shame really as Solus 2 works far better than Solus 3. Solus 3 is just an over engineered mess at the moment, I've had so many problems with it since we installed it.

vikpaw Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I swear they agreed to keep it on indefinitely, and agreed to work on MSIs so maybe that will help replace it. I don't see the big deal, so long as they tell you what you need and provide a means to download that isn't S3 I only ever use ISOs 1
Lion93 Posted March 28, 2014 Author Posted March 28, 2014 SOLUS3 is a mess at the moment, but surely the best thing to do at the moment is to install it on all your servers. While contining to use SOLUS2 until the new release is available (end of May/beginning of June). With the new design you can then configure and deploy easily... apparently.

Everyone remembers 98 fondly... up until they start using it again after a few years of XP. Then they remember the problems. Hearing the words "digital signature" and "error" in the same convo still makes me twitch. I only ever use ISOs - I want to say it's because your internet is flaky - but we both know it's because your hardcore

Everyone remembers 98 fondly... up until they start using it again after a few years of XP. Then they remember the problems. I think Solus3 is more suited to a Vista analogy, sticking with what we have for as long as possible and hopefully something better will come along shortly.

Most schools will have small dns issues. The design of solus 3 is shocking. No other software is based solely on DNS, thats just crazy.
sparkeh Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Putting aside the dreadful, dreadful UI, and the fact that's its an unnecessary extra console (but lets not start the msi debate again) and the fact I swear loudly every time I rename a PC and forget to take it out of S3 first (for God's sake someone fix that)...*grits teeth* S3 actually works well for us.

DNS is Step 2 in the Book of Technician right after networking. Having DNS issues would cause you to have all sorts of problems. localzuk Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 We moved to SOLUS3 when we moved to Windows 7 last summer. Other than a migration issue initially, we've had zero issues with it since. The interface is clunky and weird, but it does work well. Only thing that'd make it better is simple MSI deployment for SIMS.

Not allowing me to run my unsecure operating system! By DNS problems I mean things like records not updating for a few days. Most schools will have this problem and it makes Solus 3 virtually useless if you rename computers regularly. I'm just saying that I know of no other software that relies solely on DNS to resolve computers. Why cant they make the solus 3 agent respond to name changes for example?

matt40k Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 That's a bit blunt! Perhaps DNS scavenging would help @zag, to be honest if it's a real problem I'd just ask someone to pop over. It's worth getting set up right but you won't do it often enough to warrant really learning so it's worth outsourcing the task.

My point before stands, if schools have DNS problems, they have IT staff problems. I seem to remember a time, when your local support team would blame everything on DNS. It was their catchall for any problem.

They were very often well outside of a) common sense b) logic and c) best practice!

vikpaw Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 We use images for the PCs initially because we have other things that need deploying too that don't have S2 or S3 either; then following an update to the server by ISO - the workstations just upgrade. Never had a major problem with it to be honest.
