Free Switch IT Off stickers + Power management tools

PCPro are offering free stickers to remind people to switch their computers off at night. I applied four weeks ago and they've just arrived. I'm sticking them around staff offices - the worst offenders. (I know that if I put them in the main ICT suites they'll just get pulled off).

I also use Energy Star's EZ GPO to manage energy saver settings (turn off monitors etc) by Group Policy.

 

I don't know if these have been mentioned before, but it's worth mentioning again. Every little helps.

how would you work out how much it costs to run a computer/ per day?

We encourage staff not to turn their classroom PCs off themselves - we have this done automatically at a scheduled time when the school closes.

Power consumption in kwh x cost per kwh - last time I checked most of our PCs used about 85-100w in general use, so basically the same cost as leaving a 100w lightbulb on all the time. Don't know what business rate's are but at home rates that's about 9-15p per kwh. 100w on for 10 hours = 1kwh = 15p. Multiply that by the number of PCs over the whole school day or if left on overnight/weekends etc and you get a ballpark figure...

I've always been of the belief that energy saving settings should only be used for laptops while away from mains power. Only monitors going into standby is worth doing. Switching off PC's at the end of the day through some automoated commands is good enough.
