Prevent spaces in username, possible?

Anyone know a way to prevent users accidentally putting spaces when typing in their username? It is one of the biggest issues for children logging in.

On a serious note: I don't think so, no, what if you had a space in your username?

It is an issue, but they're going to have to learn sooner or later that " jsmith" is not the same as "jsmith" or "jsmith ". Same goes for passwords.

Have you tried telling them to press crtl-a and delete before entering their username?

I am looking into something called scancode. I plan to use it disable the spacebar then use another program to reenable the spacebar once the user has logged in. I will probably disable caps lock as well.

I could wipe up a exe that disables the spacebar via the scancodes (easy to do)(or any other key), but it won't work at login screen. That's a secured screen....

If you plan on making the changes in the registry, then it might work. But I doubt you will be able to change it once a person logs in without a reboot.

 

I actually remap the keyboard via scancode in my edulocker program.

I just have to work out the codes I need for the registry. If only I had time for such a thing. (I support in class as well, hence why it would save my time if I can sort this out)

If they really wanted to be annoying they could work out how to change their password to one with spaces in.
