ERA, MPLC, PVSL, and CLA now provided to state schools by DfE at no extra cost

DfE: Copyright deals will cut red tape and save schools £6.5 million

 

Schools across England will save more than £6.5 million after the government struck deals with licensing companies for shared rights to use films, newspapers and television shows in classrooms.

 

The licences previously had to be bought individually by schools and local authorities, often resulting in expensive and time-consuming negotiations.

 

Now the Department for Education has reached agreements so that from next month all state schools in England will be automatically covered for these licences, potentially saving more than £6.5 million.

 

Press release states this applies to "all state schools, including local authority maintained schools, academies, and other types of schools such as pupil referral units (PRUs) and special schools." Curiously it does not mention free schools, which is odd given the attention the DfE normally places on them. I have asked for clarification on whether this does indeed apply to them (Update: It does), but for the rest of you this will save a bit more cash (the CLA one was already centrally proivided from April 2013 IIRC).

 

Note that you may still need to separately obtain PPL or PRS for Music licences if you are playing music, and a CWCL licence if you are reproducing hymns for assemblies (CLA does not cover this use).

Excellent. Makes life quite a bit easier! That leaves just:

 

ERA Plus license for VLE hosted TV and radio clips,

CWCL for hymn music,

PPL and PRS for music playback,

MCPS for live show recording (along with specific recording rights),

PRS for music license for hold music (not the same as the normal PRS license),

PPL for music license for hold music (not the same as the normal PPL license).

 

No doubt I've missed some!

According to footnote 5 of the press release, ERA Plus is being merged with ERA to create a single licence as of April 1st.

 

Also, doesn't MCPS cover hold music?

With Hold Music, I'm not entirely sure - as far as I can tell, you need 2 licenses -

Do you need a license for royalty free hold music?
