Server Monitoring software

I know this must get asked a lot but just wondering what software do people use to monitor their servers ?

Yeah, PRTG is good. Easy to set up (dependent on the hardware you want to monitor). Not the cheapest, but it keeps us a head of the curve in terms of monitoring server performance (one specific example is keeping an eye on our SCCM server load - disk space, network traffic, cpu, memory, etc). We also use it to monitor our network infrastructure too.

Monitor what? We use nagios to monitor ping response, processor use, disc use, the presence of or responses from some services. It's free, well documented, flexible and reliable.

SCOM as we are very much a Microsoft house so it has great ties with core MS things like Exchange, AD, DNS, DHCP, DFS, Lync, SQL, ISA / TMG, System Center.... you can then bolt bits onto like like Symantec do a module for Backup Exec reporting, Veeam also have one and that also has a plus of it does VMware monitoring in it as well as the Veeam stuff

We use IP Monitor from Solar Winds

 

Despite the name it doesn't just ping devices - it will monitor the status of services, disk space, memory usage and so on. It also has a specific set of monitors for applications like Exchange and SQL Server.

 

Its not free but the support is good and it gets updated regularly

We use Pandora FMS to monitoring all our systems: hosts Unix, windows, Macs, routers, swithches, our web page, all our services, some temperature sensors... It's a very flexible tool, and easier than other tools to manage. Before, I used Nagios and when I had to monitor any special data, I had to write a new plugin and I'm not a developer, it was very difficult to me.
