Desktop and start menu redirection issues

Hi all,

 

At school we use desktop and start menu redirection for both staff and pupil. This is working fine. I created a new redirection for one student who has visual impairment issues and need a different desktop. I have created a new policy but it doesn’t seem to work and the child does not get that desktop.

 

I have created a new OU called SEN, I have created a Group call SEN, this child is a member of SEN group and is in the SEN OU. I have created a folder called Desktop and Start Menu in the Shared Icons folder. I have created a desktop and start menu policy which is pushed out via group policy. I am using Server 2012 and Windows 7 PC’s.

 

Any help will be most appreciated….. Thanks in advance

Have you tried running rsop.msc when logged in as the student.

 

It will give you a list of all currently applied settings and which GPO they came from inc any errors.

 

The obvious things youve probably checked already are permissions to the new SEN desktop folder to ensure they have permission and also to check that they are not in a group youve denied access to.

 

The other thing is trying the enforce GPO option incase its inheriting your normal redirection GPO.

I've been doing a lot of work on this at the moment, if its not working check the Error Log, if Windows isn't able to apply the Start Menu because of permissions etc it does actually flag it up in the log (as I found out about 2 days later than I needed!)

Generic advice: install the hotfixes listed in post linked above.

 

Once done, all odd behaviour is probably a configuration error

Which error logs do I look at?

 

I have check the folder permissions and they seem fine. I have tried running the rsop.msc logged on as the student and it doesn't show the folder redirection policy.

I recently had a problem where folder redirection was failing and the cure was to enable the following in the GPO and tweak where it applied (so the relevant machines fell in the scope): Computer>Admin Templates>System>Group Policy>Folder Redirection Policy Processing and tick "Process even if the group policy objects have not changed". YMMV.

I have checked group policy and the SEN folder has a blue exclamation mark on it which indicates that inheritance is blocked. Any idea why this has happened or how I over come this??? I have another folder redirection for other users and that works fine. For some reason the SEN folder redirection not working. Could it be that both redirection policy are clashing?????
