mikeprice Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Why are so many people panicking about getting rid of their old coins they seem to think they have to spend them all before tomorrow - and don't consider that they will get more back as change over the next few months anyway - I am wiling to take your old £1 coins off your hands if they are worrying you - free of charge! (as a special offer - I will also take those nasty plastic fivers that are made by killing animals - it will save them soiling your wallet/purse) 4

What should I do with my current £1 coins after legal tender status is removed? Following the ending of legal tender status, the current round £1 coin can continue to be deposited into a customer’s account, either business or personal, at most High Street Banks including RBS, NatWest, Ulster, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, Santander, Nationwide, Clydesdale, Yorkshire Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and The Post Office. It may be possible to exchange £1 coins at these banks and the Post Office provided you hold an account with them. Specific arrangements may vary from bank to bank, including deposit limits. It is recommended that you consult with your bank directly.

AMLinington Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 They do it in Australia. They don't have 1 & 2 cent coins. But they sell stuff at 99c so it gets rounded to $1 anyway. Why bother? They do it in Iceland too - their currency is basically just high number Krona and pretty much everything is rounded up into the 10's - so something might be 1550Kr, but I don't recall ever being given anything less than 10Kr and they round up and round down because less than 10Kr is so worthless. Along with this, can retailers just stop making things 1p less than a full pound (eg 99p, £1.99 etc) its very irritating and we know what they are doing! Blah blah, psychology, blah blah foolish sheeple shoppers, blah blah something-science-y. But yes, it's tedious. In all my life I have never had a counterfeit coin, nor did I even know they existed until that post came up, suppose it could depend on where you live!? Yes you have. You just didn't realise. 1 in 40 are fake. The really easy ones are the ones that are too yellow in colour (which might be challenging for colour blind people), but the easiest way to tell is to compare the front and back - if the Head and 'Tail' designs are aligned, then it's likely real, if they are misaligned then it's fake. The edges will also be too smooth and the design on the edge lacks definition. Here is an example: They look very similar but the top one is fake.
