Probably a silly question...

How do you check if KMS is setup/running? [server 2008r2]

I'm setting up some VMs for testing software and need to activate Windows 7...

Unless you're hitting the 25 limit before it actually activates, normally it's just looking through the event logs on client and server for the "questions" and "responses" etc.

...fun

This is one of the downsides to being an RM school.

Usually I just type in a few thing and it all goes through.

Now I need to do it without RM and i'm slightly stuck...

:p Unless you actually want KMS to test something, wouldn't it just be easier to use MAK keys for the VMs?

"slmgr.vbs /dli" ?

I tried that... about as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

There's dli and dlv, but it's not really going to help licensing if you're below 25 machines (Assumed this was a seperate new VM network? or is it just VM clients old network?)

Did you try /dlv for verbose mode?

What exactly are you trying to do/what is the issue?

Random VMs on my desktop.

Yup... Chocolate teapot.

Lots of words, very little information.

I'm trying to find a valid key I can use on a VM [which is at the "activate Windows" stage] so I can test software without the RM bamf and mess about with the JDK.

But, I can't find anything. It doesn't help that my google-fu is being defeated by our shoddy filtering...

Ah right.

If you are using your RM server (and if memory serves - my RM knowledge is a bit rusty) to try and activate it won't work as I don't think CC4 uses KMS, it supplies the key at installation. If you are using a VM as the KMS host then I guess you below the count to start activation?

Either way, I don't think that KMS is your friend here then.

Is this what you are looking for?

Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys (these are used for the kms clients)

partially depends if your server was built with a mak or kms key itself and if port whatever number it is is allowed via firewall. Personally i often as not set up a vm running $lastest$ windows client i had a key for at the time and use that as a kms server. To check i have 2 batch files (one windows one office)

windows

cscript.exe C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /dlv > "C:\Users\me\Desktop\kms.txt"

office

cscript.exe C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /dlv bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864 > "c:\users\me\Desktop\kms office2010.txt"

dumps the output to a simple text file i can scroll through

...I may just wait until after Summer, when we've got proper microsoft licencing and no RM.

There goes my Java based CPD.

Can you not find the entrys in DNS to tell you what and where it is?

Looking through things again [after copious amounts of coffee], it appears our server has a MAK key [lol redundancy]

No KMS for us. Which, as far as I can tell, means I can't licence this VM.

if you have a volume license as long as you only want to acticate clients just set up a vm using your windows 8.1 kms key that will kms your network quite happily once youve it 25 unique erquests it dosent need to be on a server

Unless I have read the situation wrong, there aren't 25 clients requesting activation?

If you have the licence, can't you use the MAK that RM using during deployment? (That's ok right?).

if its vms just create 25 then delete the ones you dont need measn nect time you rebuild real pcs they will kms activate lol

if its just vms for testing or your own use id be tempted to just keep rearming them give you approx 120 days use without a code anyway
