mac_shinobi Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Hi All My google fu skills are lacking , I could have sworn there was a post on edugeek a while back where someone posted some useful things to do to try and get a USB Memory Stick to work again ref either soldering or reflowing the solder on the memory stick or something to that effect The memory stick I have been given is not getting any power or being detected by any computer what so ever, I will obviously need to take the USB Memory stick out of its plastic enclosure etc but wondering if someone could post the relevant link and any other things that may help ie data recovery software ( I know about test disk / photo rec ) but think there was another utility or two that have been mentioned in the past Thanks @Arthur @Midget --> Not sure if that is his edugeek handle etc ( apologies if not ) @seawolf @SYNACK
glen_j Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 you'll need to get the pc to detect it first before any software will help, check the solder joints from the usb connector to the pcb and this is the most common failure

Will try and attach a photo later, hopefully some way of getting the two back together with the correct pins etc and getting something off of it ? Should have done a google or something before trying to remove the PCB board - originally thought it was some kind of heat sink to keep the chips cooler, then saw the pins and was like aahhhh crud Maybe ship it to a fellow edugeeker who is better with repairing / soldering of memory sticks to see if they can get anything off of it ?? alexsanger Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 For what its worth, I have found R-Studio works well at recovering otherwise unreadable flash drives, but yes, the PC has to recognise a device first. Perhaps this should serve as a salutary lesson for the owner? Return it, along with information about your preferred cloud storage options. 1

localzuk Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Wait, so what I'm reading is that you've somehow managed to remove the surface mounted flash chip from the PCB? I'm good at soldering, but I don't think I'm that good. I also don't have a rework station to aid me.
difinity Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I've repaired a fair few USB sticks usually with a soldering iron and also have a hot air rework station. Can i help at all ? It's usually broken contacts in the USB connector or a broken crystal. Have you got any pics ? 1

difinity Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Although blurry, it does look like it has pulled off some of the contacts from the pcb. Depending on how valuable the data is, there are several companies that can read the flash and extract the data from it.
