CCTV Please recommend me a camera with sound

We're looking at installing a new CCTV system in the summer and HT would like a room fitting with 2 cameras and sound recording. The room is quite small 4m X 3m but has a high ceiling so would expect the camera to be wall mounted. We currently have an analogue 16 camera system which is 10 or more years old and it really is pants so will be ripping that out and fitting a new IP system with a few more cameras.

In this room it is very important sound is recorded clearly so want something that won't let us down and I expect getting the mic close enough to record clearly will be the biggest problem.

Hi Jobos,

We can help you with this. Axis do a range of cameras for all situations. Feel free to drop me a PM and we can discuss in more detail

CCTV must not be used to record conversations between members of the public as this is highly

intrusive and unlikely to be justified. You should choose a system without this facility if possible.

If your system comes equipped with a sound recording facility then you should turn this off or

disable it in some other way.

There are limited circumstances in which audio recording may be justified, subject to sufficient

safeguards. These could include:

Audio based alert systems (such as those triggered by changes in noise patterns such as

sudden shouting). Conversations must not be recorded, and operators should not listen in.

Two-way audio feeds from ‘help points’ covered by CCTV cameras, where these are

activated by the person requiring assistance.

Conversations between staff and particular individuals where a reliable record is needed of

what was said, such as in the charging area of a police custody suite6.

Where recording is triggered due to a specific threat, e.g. a ‘panic button’ in a taxi cab.

In the limited circumstances where audio recording is justified, signs must make it very clear that

audio recording is being or may be carried out.

So yes you can do it but it's not generally advised.

Yes I've read that document.

I don't know why the HT wants it he just does  and makes my life hard

The HT already has it in his office on the old system and we've had the police in looking at the recording after a parent was abusive. Sort of worked when the police heard the language the parent was using.

I fail to see how they could differentiate between a sound recording camera and someone just getting in a lip-reader to exactly the same ends. Any problems arising from it on that alone, I believe, would be hurled out of court before someone embarrasses themselves.

If you find you need something on the budget, the Brickcom cameras are fantastic quality and well worth a look.

+1 for axis. We use it here and it works a treat. We have a couple of rooms where we record audio. Both have a sign on the door and a poster on the wall making it very clear that audio recording + CCTV is happening.

What are you going on about? It is not recommended to have cameras recording sound as per the guidelines from the ICO what has lip reading got to do with it?

At my old school I helped set up some HD Webcams (these just clipped through the gaps in the suspended Cellini) these did audio and video nice and cheap just connected back to ipsy server on an old dual core and ispy on a VM. Total cost was less than £50. *idk about the legality of the sound recording.

Not sure how I can make it clearer. What is the difference between having sound on a camera, and having someone watching your sound-less CCTV recording who can lipread?

They might not be able to hear the monitor impact on a teacher's cranium but they can see what the teacher called the parent beforehand. Same end result. Just because it's guidelined from ICO doesn't mean it will stand up in court.

Just remembered, Ubiquiti (as in Unifi) do a nice little range as AirVision. Has anyone had a play with those?
