Darylrese Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Good Morning all, I have an exchange upgrade taking place tomorrow and I cant decide between exchange 2010 and 2013. We are currently on exchange 2007. Is anyone running Exchange 2013? If so is it good? The owa is particually appealing to me, being optimised for touch screen. So many people now are accessing email on phones and tablets, it would be a great feature to have. Is there any reason not to go for exchange 2013? Regards
3s-gtech Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 (edited) Eeek - don't put 2010 in now, you're just making extra work IMO. 2013 is a solid product, much of the expertise from 2010 is transferable. The default OWA view for us on non-Apple stuff is not the fancy touch interface though ('Light interface') - not sure if that's our issue or a limitation. I do like the look of 2013 from the limited amount of screen shots I can find, but I would like to see it and have a quick play ideally. Do you know if there's a demo site anywhere? 90% of my users will probably access it from a laptop or PC but there are quite a lot of people now who like to check their email on mobile devices and with BYOD on the horrizon for us, I think it will be a perfect match! zag Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I'd personally move to Office 365. There is absolutely no need to run a massive local exchange server in educational organizations any more.

It's perfectly useable with touch, but nowhere near as slick as the Outlook.com and iOS style one. O365 is certainly worth looking at, but doesn't suit all users. I will have to quietly disagree with the above comment. I'd certainly say O365 is a no-brainer for primaries, and is a good fit for most secondaries.

I have a new exchange box ready to go for tomorrow just can't decide on 2010 or 2013. 2010 is obviously more mature, but if 2013 is stable then it makes sense to upgrade to 2013? 3s-gtech Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 2013 is now on CU3. Touch wood, it has been stable and reliable. Plenty of Powershell work needed, but that's the same in 2010.

If by 'fairly big' you mean bonkers hard and time consuming, then yeah. Here is a step by step guide by an MVP for a small site 2007 - 2013 migration. Planning, testing, planning, testing planning ,testing, checking again and them doing it. I'd bank on it taking about six weeks at around three to four hours a day. 1

I know someone who is an exchange expert so he helped me with the migration. It would have taken much longer on my own I must admit. I have logged into the 2013 web app, it looks good but a little like outlook 2013 in the fact unread messages don't stand out too much. Not sure how my users are going to get on with it but will need to give them time to adapt. How do you ungroup emails? They are currently grouped by week and in order of newest to oldest. Not sure I'd agree with that. We are a small town and twice last year our connection was lost due to hardware fault. At least we still had internal mail.
burgemaster Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Well done You did it in really good time. Installing CU2 took about 2 hours alone here! For any staff that complained that the unread emails weren't as noticeable in outlook 2013 I changed them to red. REALLY clear then. (Right click > Settings > conditional formatting > unread email > choose red and larger font)

3s-gtech Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I found that the CU installs were quick, but our server is ridiculous. To ungroup in OWA, you need to turn off conversation view on each folder.

Is it my eyes or is the text on the web app maybe a little bit blurry? (Might just be my graphics cards on home PC 2 x GTX 670's) I don't think you can change the font of unread messages on web app only outlook 2013. Has anyone made a custom theme for exchange 2013 web app? I have turned off conversation view but its still sorting emails by date and showing days of the week and 'last week' etc Edited February 21, 2014 by Darylrese

Regards Honestly, if you haven't done any more planning than that the day before a major upgrade - then you should probably have postponed the upgrade entirely. The day before is not the time to making that sort of decision.
