thegrassisgreener Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Hi all, the head at my school (by head i mean ****) anyways. He wants to give all the Governors access to the school via our VPN so they can access a shared area????? What I think I will do is just create a terminal server so once they connect to the VPN they have to remote to a dedicated machine where then can share files etc. WHAT WOULD YOU DO????????
plexer Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Why do you not think the governors should have access? I presume your governors have day jobs therefor the management of the school from their point of view is done outside normal school hours for you and therefore access to relevant information is reasonable. Ben
mattx Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 What files do they want to share then ? When I did the website for my son's school I just setup a Gov only area in which they can DL files etc..... minutes, school policies etc. I think a VPN to the school network is a bit OTT - [ in my opinion ]
Guest Guest Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 If its just in the "trail/new toy which we are never going to actually use" stage have a look at logmein.com. Their free product is great, dont know a\bout licencing issues mind, but they have a trail of the pro product so you could start them off with that before you folk out for TS licences, VPN devices, etc.
mrforgetful Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 If it's to share files, that doesn't sound like a VPN just a WebDAV folder.
Vegas Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Our Govs have a secure area on our VLE so they can view minutes, draft policies etc.
enjay Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 We have remote access for all our users anyway, so those Govs that want access are welcome to have accounts on our network - this also gives them a school email address, which some like as it means they can keep school, work and personal separate.
K.C.Leblanc Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Reminds me of where I used to work, the chairman of governors walked into the staff room, sat down at a machine that had been left logged on. He then typed out a highly confidential report and saved it into the My Documents folder of the muppet who'd left them selves logged on. It didn't dawn on him what he'd done till he left the machine and then came back half an hour later to find a log in screen.
witch Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 As a governor, it would be good if I could access policies etc when I need to -outside school hours. Vegas' idea sounds good
jojen Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 We go with the VLE. It means that they can access the documentation they need at any time, edit it and upload it from anywhere and don't need access to the internal network to do so. They also get their own school email address and the desktop will enable them to leave posts on the governors forum.
m25man Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 SSL-VPN simple to set up easy to deploy for a couple of hundred quid set it and forget it.
Joedetic Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Well VPN's can be a whole lot cheaper thatn a couple of hundred quid! Hamatchi for example is free (as far as i can remember). There are a number of open source solutions aswell. Paying extra money for a VPN ontop of your windows licenses and all the free (as in beer not speach) and/or open source stuff that is available for use these days is a bit OTT imo.
