Cleaning projectors

I'm thining about giving the projectors in the school a good clean on the inside. Some of them are out of warranty.

 

Has any one done this? got any tips? what should i look out for and play caution to? and is the any where i can possibly get documents/how too?

Is this in addition to just cleaning the filter with a can of compressed air?

Can you actually do this? For example, how high up are the projectors? Do you need to use a ladder? Have you been on the appropriate H&S courses for working up ladders/at heights. Does the school insurance cover you for doing so?

We have the propper step ladders for the job. I would take them down to work on. as for filter cleaning, I do this once a month, may be twice a month in the wood workshops and science labs.

 

I'm allowed to use step ladders, but have been advised to use when the school day is over.

There was a post on here a while ago about solving the "projector yellowing" issue on certain makes and models of projectors - it included instructions for dismantling projectors and I've mirrored the procedure on my wiki.

 

In the past, we have found that cleaning the internal lenses one at a time with some lens cloths works admirably

36 projectors in cages all padlocked and then security locked in place?

Ours are padlocked on to the bracket, then the cage is locked, we have a set of keys for every single projector and bracket.

And promethean say to clean the projectors at least once a month. Yeah lets do the math:

 

Get in class when its empty

Get up to projector

Open cage

Open padlock

Disconnect all cables

Remove projector

Clean air filters

Replace projector

Replace cables

Replace padlock

Lock up

Switch on

Re-calibrate with whiteboard (for staff who don't know how) X36

Don't! We've had em two years and not cleaned more than about 5 in that time

Even then it was only the science and food tech ones due to a lot of smoke/chemicals etc in the air.

 

I was just saying theoretically that was the process we'd have to take.

cheers for that craig. I'm feeling a little nervous about doing this, but I do have one or 2 in the school the need to be done. Will print the wiki off and let you all know how i managed.

Geoff, I do most of the AV stuff anyway. Setting up stuff for drama exams and productions, video recording and editing, photography, photo editing. Just done a bit on audio software too.

The drama teachers saw our deputy head to say they want me employed as AV as well as IT but obviously if they can get away with it on the cheap, they will :?

We've got 32... i'm a 5' 2" female (not that gender matters). My NM thinks i should be doing one every morning....by the time i was finished i'd have to start again!! I'm the only technician..

 

The majority are promethean which is fine but then we got these stupid hitachi ones which i have to unbolt from the cradle before i can get anywhere near the filter!! Thats a 2 person job!!!

 

It's not physically possible!!

 

They're done every six weeks at best!

Na, there is a NM. I always clean them every month. Just some of them were starting to go yellow. didnt fancy sending them off to Promethean and paying extreme prices. sorry promethean, but your not cheap.

Our projectors are cleaned whenever a teacher reports the 'change filter' message on the screen. There's no pattern or organisation to it, on top of everything else, we really don't have time to intorduce schedules for maintenance like this, much as we'd like to.
