Good local multiplayer games?

Just after what people think are great local multiplayer games? Use to be into my gaming a lot but it seems to have died up years ago, but i miss the mates round, 4 controllers , beers , pizza and playing a game.

 

The current and last gen consoles seem at best poor for this. (PS3/PS4/Xbox360/XboxOne). Seems to be more aimed at single player or online play now, and i miss the social side of it, and a lobby with 13 year olds playing rap music down the mic aint my idea of fun.

 

Goldeneye Reloaded looks decent for 4 player split screen, and Blur too. Use to enjoy Mashed years ago.

 

Does not matter what console or how old as I'm just gonna go on ebay and buy whatever console cheap (although i only have a PS3 and Wii at the moment as second 360 died) just name some decent games to play as a group.

OT: the Worms games are all great, Revolution is probably best for multiplayer though as it works with a pad (I've only played the PC versions, I dare say there are 360/PS3 versions out there too)

 

Also, don't overlook Minecraft. I didn't play it for ages because I didn't get the point, but there is something oddly satisfying about an open world with an infinite supply of virtual Lego blocks. On the PC there are a ton of mods that create games within the game such as capture the flag and base defence - check out YogsCast and RedHat on YouTube for ideas in that area

Unreal Tournament on the pc?

 

Me and my friends at college use to play this on the college network at lunch times. Had lots of fun.

Always found Gears of war 3 to be a good laugh on multiplayer, although possibly not on split screen.

As much as we like PC gaming, want the convenience of sofa and tv.

Halo is fun for just quick death matches.

 

Borderlands 2 has a good co-op story mode

Burnout Revenge on the 360 was always fun, set up for pass the controller. Fight Night Round 3 was flavour of the month with a few of us for a while as well, get some epic battles going on in it.

 

You'll probably have more luck with XBLA etc. for couch multiplayer - that, or get a Wii. Nintendo have been the best at couch multiplayer for two generations now across the GameCube and Wii. Infact, get a Wii, then grab a couple of GameCube controllers from eBay and hunt down copies of Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Brothers (GameCube or Wii version, you can use a GC controller in both) and Super Monkey Ball 1. All superb.

TrackMania Forever is a great racing game and free :-)

GT5,LBP Karting and Street fighter IV is always a winner on my PS3 along with Zen Pinball split screen and (believe it or not) Hamsterball!

I have a soft spot for the Command and Conquer games...they were always fun.

Assuming N people Driving to the field its not and it worse that playing games at a house since N-1 people need to drive in that instance because of 1 person living at the intended venue.

@Quackers Have you considered board games? I never really played anything other than Monopoly and other family games but there are a whole load of games aimed at "board gamers"

 

Last time I had mates over for games we played "Settlers of Catan", "Pandemic" and "Cards Against Humanity" but I also have the game of thrones board game which is EPIC. A couple of my mates have picked up some games since last time so we are looking at having a whole saturday of gaming next time.

And if you upgrade [sidegrade? Downgrade?] to a Wii U, Mario 3D World and IIRC New Super Mario Bros U [Or Luigi Bros U] has 4 player local co-op. [You can also troll your friends super hard if you have the tablet.]

We tend to have a few games that we keep going back to, depending what mood we're in.. varying consoles:

 

Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3/360)

Street Fighter 4 (PS3/360)

Mortal Kombat (Newest version PS3)

Mario Kart Double Dash (Gamecube)

Mario Party (N64)

Golden Eye (N64)

Injustice (PS4)

 

Used to hammer Halo 3, but it's been a very long time since that's seen the light of day now.

Are we working on PC's?

Prefer FPS? Go for Unreal Tournament GOTY (Good ol' UT99!) or UT2004.

Fancy racing? The TrackMania series have multiplayer and are good if you're into that kind of thing.

Maybe you like RTS? Age of Empires or, if you can get your hands on it, I'd recommend Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. C&C is well-praised, too, but I've never played it.

Want something silly? Octodad has local multiplay. (I admit, I caved and purchased it over the weekend, many, many funs were had!)

 

If you can get your hands on a console, get an N64. Mario Party 2 and GoldenEye Slappers Only are always good choices.

If it's a Wii you get, Mario Kart is always a family favourite. Smash Bro's isn't that bad, too.
