Password Changing

At the moment we have a lot of pupils coming to our office for password changes. Our current way of doing it is that they fill out a paper form with their details and we then change it for them. Obviously this takes time and only one password can be changed at a time.

 

To minimise downtime in lessons, we'd like pupils to be able to change their own passwords from the computer they are wanting to use rather than having to come and see us every time. I know there's software out there that will allow a member of staff to reset a password but if possible we want to rule out any involvement with staff as much as we can.

 

Anyone done this before and can recommend a good way of doing this? Maybe something like the 'Reset Password' feature in Windows but which then asks for a security question before they can then change their password. Ideally being able to force a password criteria would be handy.

 

Any help will be much appreciated.

You might need a generic login that can only run the tool. Don't think there is a native method in windows for this.

In our case, students have lunch cards - knocked up a little application that looks the students up on our lunch card database, then resets their password. Kids come up to window, and just swipe their card if they have it

 

'little application' is a dotnet application, that does a AD call to reset password with some admin rights, and it sits on a spare touch screen PC in our case - with the dotnet app being set as the shell via group policy

Look for self service password reset software, it will sit on the login gina and users will have to enroll their details first and pick security questions and anyone who is at a PC can then reset their own password a bit like you do for many online things these days. That of course isnt free but it answers your questions.

 

Other thing is to delegate rights for certain staff members to be able to reset passwords and for that you could create a MMC snap in with the relevant snap-in installed.

We have a password reset machine on the wall. You put your finger on it and it then links your prints to an AD account and lets you reset the password.

 

Also teachers can reset passwords for students.

Is that a home grown solution (very impressive if it is), or a commercial solution? If it's commercially available, who sells it? Cost?

Are you meaning the finger print readers?

 

We used to use Biostore now we use NRS. Can't remember the cost of the Biostore. The NRS one is built into the dinners pre-order kiosk so it was a bonus to us.

Sounds like Biostore's password manager product. ISTR a quote of around £800, but that was a few years back.

Biostore is expensive, you are looking at around £1k for each terminal by the time you add licenses etc into it all.
