Move away from LEA / SWGFL

Hi Everyone

 

Im considering moving away from our LEA provided SWGFL internet conection to save costs. What other providers do you recomend and what would be involved should i go down the route of moving away?

Moved away from SWGFL last August, feel free to PM any questions if you like.

 

We ended up going with @SchoolsBroadband and are now on a 100mb service, lightspeed filter and fortigate firewall for about £4k pa less than what we were paying SWGfL for a 30mb line with their mickey mouse filtering. We did investigate the 3 main filtering companies including having them in to present and demonstrate as well as a good 7-10 quotes for leased line providers before we made our decision. Overall very happy, only complaint is that lightspeed probably weren't entirely ready to be providing a hosted solution as not all their features currently work but on the flipside it's also much cheaper this way than it is to have a box in house, so they can be excused for that

Can you make/Edit firewall changes yourself? also what happens the changes made on the SWGFL? do they get migrated?

Yep you can manage all your own firewall changes, you can ask their tech support to do it too if you don't feel comfortable doing it (or if you need guidance on how to use it then they'll walk you through it)

 

None of the SWGfL changes are migrated, but if you had them documented or know which rules you needed in place then schools broadband will work with you to get them all setup on the fortigate the same day your line goes live.

We've done this excercise too... We were able to export our SWGFL rules to CSV and then import them into our new Palo Alto device as custom filtering lists..

 

I would thoroughly recommend our solution of Gigler/City fibre 1024mb broadband and Palo 3020 firewall filtering appliance. The only issue here is that the Gigler broadband is only available in small areas.

Did you also go with the Fortigate Anti-virus for your network devices or are you using something else?

I'm using SCEP for my antivirus, i don't think it was mentioned as an option to use the fortigate AV when i went with it, that said i probably wouldn't have anyway as we're quite happy with SCEP
