They were not that expensive from memory. Something like £500 each. Also Samsung just released a 1tb SSD for 400 quid!! Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE1T0 - solid... | MZ-7TE1T0BW | £406.99 | Insight UK I wouldn't trust those Samsung drives on our main file server as they use are very new different type of memory, but we use them on our backups and so far no troubles. Anyway, it just made me laugh seeing the death of another mechanical disks, surely their time will be up soon. Edited January 21, 2014 by zag

synaesthesia Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 All mechanical drives here are replaced with SSD on failure with exceptions of the servers. Maybe when the price drops a bit, but it's fair to say our budget makes most schools look positively rich

synaesthesia Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) All the other drives are fine. It was *filthy* so something's gotten in there or it imploded on it's own. All the other drives are fine (there's another 9 in that box). Will be keeping a close eye on the ones next to it! It's a Seagate 1TB by the way, so I shall hasten to point people to @sonofsanta 's thread at http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/130513-seagate-hdd-failure-rates-25-over-3-years-article.html Now you mention it, we *do* have a nationally recognised volleyball team!
