My username and password don't work (despite password reset!)

Don't you just hate these.

You know full well their account is fine and they are either pulling a fast one on the teacher or they can't type to save their lives. I refuse to go over to the classroom in question, and just attempt to login with their account on a laptop in the office and then respond on the helpdesk with "the login account is fine, please try again"

Back in my last place, we had to expain to students who didn't speak that much english that we've reset your password to "password". The reply was usually, yes I need a password!

Sure theres not two accounts?

I have done this before and there was two students with the same initial and surname:

dsmith and dsmith1.

Poor dsmith had their password reset 3 or 4 times before I stopped being grumpy and went and tried. :)

oh yes, we had brothers with exactly the same names. I don't know how they got on at home. It was a regular sight to see them appear at the door plus an unsuspecting teacher, and you didn't have to even ask. oh no here we go again.

I’ve also seen them ask for password resets when they get one of the other error messages.

A cannot contact / connect to the domain

B trust relationship

C your password must be changed.

A and B are issues that need addressed however it doesn’t mean your password is not working.

C is the one that gets me the most, they just don’t read what the message is telling them.

Well if you can't log on it must be because your thick horrible little teenage scum who can't remember a password or because the nasty evil computer has forgotten poor little flufflys password.

Just don't waste your time checking to see what the problem is before you send thick little fluffly to the ict tech.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a Year 7 child a while ago:

Kid: My password don't work.

Me: [on instinct] Doesn't. Your password doesn't work I think you mean.

Kid: Yeah, er, that.

Me: [brings up ADUC and the 'reset password' screen] Type in a new password - at least 7 characters long and with a number in.

I turn away to grab a cable or something, turn back and she's typed about 20 characters into the box!

Me: Er, probably want to pick something slightly shorter otherwise you won't remember it.

Kid: Oh I will, it's just the letter 'a' repeated 22 times with a 1 at the end.

Me: [Wat.] What was your password before?

Kid: The same, except it was like 15 times or something. I forgot.

Me: [Head, meet desk] Pick something else.

Their mother forgot what she named the first one and just picked the same one again? I'm not sure I'd expect them to remember passwords!

Or maybe they were twins and the arguments over a name had been so intense that neither of the parents could bear to go back there - "we picked Dave, so Dave they are".

My mind boggled.

Can confirm. I've had that one before. Reset a password for a student, teacher hangs up phone. Calls back 2 minutes later. "She says it's still not working" so I figure it's no logon servers, right?

Take a walk up to the room, "You must change your password"

I gave her a "Really? Really?!" look and she sat there confused. I pointed at the screen and she looked at the screen. Directly at the error message. "Ssssiiiiirrrrrr, why won't it wooorrrkkk?!"

I despair.
