Archiving DVD Collection to Home Server

It's been some time since I had a need to rip a DVD.

 

One of my holiday jobs is to start sticking some 200 DVDs on to my home server for streaming.

 

I've used HandBrake in the past (quite a few years ago) and it either can't do it or pixelates everything.

 

VLC takes an age to do each film.

 

How do you do it? Thanks!

Handbrake for me, then into iflicks then into iTunes for streaming to multiple devices

MakeMKV to rip the disc, handbrake to compress, Serviio to stream or just a USB stick to get it back to the big screen.

I've been doing the same thing and am using DVD Decrypter for the extraction (along with RipIt4Me for the discs with protected sectors). Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 is working great for me for compression to M4V.

+1. AnyDVD is also good since it's constantly updated, but it's not free.

RipIt4Me was a great program. It's a shame it was discontinued in 2007. Does it still work for newer DVDs?

Yep, I generally use makemkv to rip and handbrake to m4v and Into Plex. Certainly on Mac OS X.

 

I sometimes use anydvd if I'm on my windows machine.

 

Intend to rip blu-rays now but the above is equally at home with DVDs of course.

Any thoughts on the best way to archive DVDs, without compression, to recreate them when the kids leave them on the floor for the cats to play with?

 

I want the simplestway to recreate a normal DVD from a backup on an HDD that I'll leave in the loft (not spinning), unless needed.

 

Oh yes, I'm aware that "fair use" hasn't reached our shores yet.

Would like to know the best way to stream.

 

Although I Would like to keep the 5.1 surround sound.

Not a clue. Turns out none of my DVDs that were awkward are post-2007!

Am not trying to break copyright etc but just curious, is this also possible for Blu Ray Movies ? Basically got a lil un and would be a lot better if we could in the near future get a NAS device and do the same or similar for DVD's and Blu Ray movies so that we can watch and use the digital copies instead of getting discs scratched etc

Yes, I do mainly blu-rays these day. I always use makemkv first then handbrake. Handbrake 9.9 will cope with blu-ray subtitles too.

 

I think legally you still shouldn't do it but you'd be okay for home use only.

 

It works well for my little uns - especially with a Plex client on the tv

Sorry for bringing an old topic up - I have just gotten the Inbetweeners TV Box set and am ripping it using MakeMKV. Anyone know of a way to just get the episodes and not the special features. Looks like I will have to check each file and fish them out.

You can probably find the titles numbers somewhere on the internet.

 

But generally you'll have the 4/6 episode files that have similar time length and file size. The special features tend to be smaller.

The episodes tend to be in the order they are on disc but i find sometimes it's trial and error.
