Hi everybody,

I have a black box in my car so it logs everything I do whilst I'm driving.

At the moment on the live portal (page to keep track of your driving) it says I have driven 2000 miles this year when it reality I have driven 5000 miles. My policy is 6000 miles and if I go over the 6000 miles I can pay £200 for 2000 more miles...Should I purchase more miles or keep driving until the portal says I've driven 6000 miles?

I would like to keep on driving until it says I've driven 6000 miles on the portal but on the other hand I don't want to get a fine!

Merry Christmas to everybody.

George.

if the cars old enough to require an mot it will be logged anyway so fess up imo not worth risking driving without insurance as they will probably say if you go far over and then have an accident

Why would you want a black box and an extra £200 for 2000 miles is a rip off. I'm 19 drive a 1.8 Honda Civic 2011 Type S and my insurance is £750 for the year with no limitations and that's fully comp!! Don't black boxes also stop you traveling at night (after 11pm) etc...

probably to get cheaper insurance????

I'm a very careful and defensive driver and I've considered it and will again at next year's renewal

Meh... Spose but I'd prefer spending £100 more and being able to drive when I want wherever I want without a prying eye watching all the time, plus I don't like the fact they rip your dash out to install this box.

remember it depends on your post code.. i move 5 miles down the road this year my insurance dropped to over half it was , i think those black boxes can reduce premium quite alot though i wouldnt have one....

I would question the insurance company about the effectivness of the device and portal if the driving is not reflected by the black box.

If it's inacurate on distance what happens if it adds 3000 miles all of a sudden over night. how fast did it think you did the 3000 miles!

Well I'm 18 and needed the car to get to work, so I had no choice really to have a black box because the insurance was just too expensive otherwise.

In regards to location I'm in a small village in Bedfordshire, so I thought it would be cheaper because it's quieter than the big towns and cities.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will just end up paying £200 for an extra 2000 miles!!!

There is no curfew after 11pm, they just advise you don't drive between 23:00 - 04:00.

Small vilages out of town can actualy be a bad point for insurance companies.

Is there no explination for the discrepancy?

Rob

No, it's rather annoying. But I log my miles every time I fill up with petrol but yes it's annoying.

@gmonks at 18 don't just use comparison sites for your insurance call the cheaper insurance company when I was 17 they charged me £2600 for a 1.2 clio but I got this down to £1400 by putting a lot of man hours in calling all the companys up! I do this every year and normally get them below the cost of a black box anyway. I feel your pain though man it is expensive for us young'uns!

If you are going to do that anyway, first flag the discrepancy on the log with your insurance company and demand an explanation. If they are not logging 3000 miles of _careful driving_, then you are potentially missing out on a reduction in your premium in recognition of that.
