Problem joining domain

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter AD controller along with 3 Windows Server 2008R2 servers.

 

Problems is whenever I try to joining the 208 servers to the 2012 domain i get the following error of network path not found.

 

I am at a loss to figure this problem out as all servers can see each other as 2 of the the 2008 servers being used as storage server with their drive space mapped back to the 2012 server.

 

All servers are on the same network, I can ping all from all, I have Administrator access on all servers. I am listed in the Domain Admin group.

what forest/domain functional level have you set on the 2012 box if its too high 2008 boxes wont be able to join at least as dc's

I will check as I did a basic install of the AD controller.

I "THINK" if its an only dc its automatically 2012 level and you cant knock it down but im not sure

then you cant join 2008 boxes as anything other than member servers (so workstations that run a server os) they will never be able to be added as domain controllers you cant reduce the functional levels

That's what I have been trying to do but I keep getting the network path not found error???

 

2012 server 192.168.1.3

2008 servers 192.168.1.5/6/7

Check that you can resolve the fully qualified domain name from DNS. e.g Ping example.local from the 2008 servers

DNS resolution works on all machines.

 

I had already placed the 2008 servers into the DNS record before I tried to join them to the domain, is that my problem?

Can your 2008 clients resolve the domain? What happens when you type your domain name into NSLOOKUP from one of the 2008 boxes?

Everything resolves correctly.

 

Also tried to join a Windows7 desktop to the domain and got the same error message. . .

Have these computers got multiple NICs in?

So when you do

 

nslookup mydomain.com

 

IE if your domain controller is dc1.mydomain.com nslookup JUST the domain name.

 

 

That should resolve and show you the ip of all domain controllers within your domain.

Also does the domain controller point to itself for DNS lookups?

I'd make sure (if you're not already), to join servers/workstations with the FQDN and not the NETBIOS name.

 

And as others have stated, as this is a new domain with existing 2012 DCs, you cannot then add a 2008 R2 DC for example. You can of course do this the other way around. Existing 2008 R2 domain, then add 2012 DCs.
