Email for Students

First of all, please accept my apologies if this is in the wrong place.

 

We have been told that as part of one of the ICT course requirements that our Year 10 students need access to email. The problem is that we don't want them on our Exchange server, we would like to have a separate server or method for these students, as we don't have the CALS for this.

 

Ideally we are looking for maybe a piece of free software that we can run on a server and create a dummy domain where we can add the students to this server.

 

We can't use external services as they need to be able to use Outlook.

 

Any advise?

Web based mail like from Microsoft or GMail. Why do they need to use Outlook? They should be shown webmail rather than Outlook.

I would try out both Office 365 and Google Apps for Education and see which you like. Both can have emails that do not leave a domain etc.

Maybe, but it is for us to suggest, perhaps more suitable, alternatives.

Do you work for MS as that is not the case. Rather than pushing what you or I thought was the best option I signed all my schools up to Office 356 and Google Apps for Education and gave them the choice. None went with Office 365. So as you can see you do need to use you brain a bit.

I'm loving it, so why Google and not O365 for your case?

We are Google Apps for Education users and loving it. Others will find O365 suits their needs better. They are both free!

 

I find it very unlikely that students must use Outlook for email... no syllabus would say that. Your IT Teachers may need bringing up to date. Just because you use a web based service doesn't mean that the school can't be in control. As our kids are primary age, we prevent sending and receiving external emails for pupils for example.

Google has worked well here - support is good and you can sync to outlook if you want to.

If you're dead set against external services have you considered Zimbra on an internal server?

You could create a seperate information store for the students on your exchange server, that way they're separate.

 

If not, Gmail for Education is quite good. You could configure POP3 with the accounts so they can use Outlook.
