Password Protecting USB for TV

Hey guys,

 

At our primary school, we are using a TV in reception to display pictures of the school etc, these are stored on a USB stick which the TV reads it from and does a nice display and all that.

 

My question is, is there a way to password protect the USB stick so that if someone steals it they cannot access the pictures of the children, but the TV can still read it? Even if we have to enter a password on the TV to access them?

 

I am wondering if this is possible, and if so how to do it.

Unless it's a functionality provided by the TV then I'm afraid not.

 

Could you use a usb lead so that the stick can be located in a safe place even if it was a wall mounted box?

As @plexer said, without the TV providing that functionality (I'm not aware of any that do) it's a none starter.

 

However, you could use Raspberry Pi's to do this: encrypt the USB stick with TrueCrypt or similar and mount it to the R-Pi, then have the R-Pi play a slideshow on the TV. Hell with a Raspberry Pi you could just have it play a slideshow from a network share and remove the USB from the equation all together...

The fact it says it'll work on any Os means that the unlock procedure doesn't rely on the os at all. So I assume the TV is nothing more that a digital photo frame. This may work. it locks upon removal.

Thanks for your answers guys! The USB's with keyboard's seem pretty expensive, a Raspberry Pi with 4GB SD would be cheaper and give me more options. A lot for me to consider!

We used to use a TV with a memory stick. Since installing Xibo we have never looked back.

 

Getting the infrastructure in place to run it can be a hassle but when its there its amazing!

 

I recommend looking into it

I believe you can use R-Pi's as Xibo clients too

You can. We do in our PE dept. There are a few limitations but don't know them off the top of my head.

Well, if you're going that route bypass a pi and get an android stick for £30 that can access the pics over wifi.
