Impero and google chrome

Hi Guys,

 

We have just had impero installed at our school and it's fab. However we have noticed that it doesn't seem to be filtering/monitoring traffic from google chrome.

 

Has anyone got any ideas on why this may be happening?

I believe that this does not need to be explained: Impero does not filter Chrome [or any Non-Internet Explorer] browser traffic.

 

Our answer: We do not install Firefox, Safari,... and do not allow students to use Chrome.

Careful if you use something like isa in your network as you will run into problems. We found some things just stopped working like our CCTV client. Took ages to troubleshoot

I will warn against the use of the impero proxy; we found it better to block the use of chrome for students.

We had to use Chrome to get some features in Moodle working, which didn't in IE.

 

To filter both, right click the compter group you want to change in the console, or Entire Network if you like to apply it everywhere, click properties

 

Then workstation settings

 

Take the tick out of "Only filter InternetExplorer web traffic (Disable the internal impero proxy)"

 

Then OK.

 

Works fine for us here filtering both Chrome and IE without affecting anything else.

We found that this setting did not allow staff or students to access any HTTPS pages.

We haven't had that issue here. Https and httpseem fine. It does take a few seconds longer for Chrome to react when the teacher blocks the internet in a room though.

It's a bit of a juggling act. Our students use GoogleApps and GoogleDrive, and they work so much better with Chrome that we've had to make compromises when it comes to Impero.

Thanks for posts as was pointed out can filter non IE browsers in the settings on the group properties. Sadly we have a few cases where our impero proxy and the onsite proxy conflict.

Hi Russ. What sort of conflicts? We are thinking of trialling Impero but we use Chrome a lot and we have a Smoothwall appliance on site.

Had sites that use Smoothwall and that tends to be ok.

It seems that the issues we see when removing the "Only Filter Internet Explorer Web Traffic" tick could be down to the way that our LEA handles HTTPS page requests.

 

This is not something I know much about and I have no other information.

Hi Russ, does TMG cause known problems? We use chrome and ie across our site and have been looking into this recently. thanks

We use TMG. It works but there are oddities, eg nobody can connect to our cctv recorders if they have the impero proxy on and we have seen weird https issues
