I've often wondered how that situation pans out with eBay - if it's stolen property then I'd fully expect Police to confiscate it from me when they discovered I'd bought it but then who'd compensate me for my loss?

Absolutely no one. Unless you've paid out money to improve or repair the goods, in which case you may be able to get compensation from the owner for repairs. Actually that's not quite true - the person who sold the items to you (assuming you weren't aware they were stolen) would be the one who should compensate you. They've essentially fraudulently taken money from you, and would owe it back. Alternatively if you bought the goods with a credit card (and again, weren't aware of the theft) the card company should return the money to you. Citizens Advice - Stolen goods 1

Yeah that's another thing that really p's me off, all the added benefits you get as a consumer if you're willing to get in to debt; we're supposed to be discouraging that kind of thing! She's given up commenting after 14 years though, as long as I "keep my cr@p in the utility out of the way". Done. Right now, at this very moment I have on my desk a Cisco 7911G IP Phone in component parts form - a pumped hot water feed exploded above it and poured a weekends worth of hot water over it, and then it was sat in the main IT store for 3 months "written off". I can see some minor rusting of screws, a bit of corrosion on the CAT6 Power socket, and a lot of "furring" round mainboard components in that area, which rubs off with a fingertip. No power when connected up. Disheartened? No. I'll acquire a toothbrush/paintbrush, some distilled water (science lab), and some cotton wool and isopropyl alcohol (science again), and clean it up, and see where we go. I've seen worse and recovered it, after all..
